I just bought a ruger 10/22 and I want a green mountain heavy barrel, do I need to buy a new stock to put the barrel on?

Short answer, yes. You can ream out the barrel chanel, but your gonna spend almost as much on a barrel chanel reamer then just getting a new, more comphy stock. The origonal ruger stock is way to short for me at least, and very uncomfortable to shoot with a scope. Tons of good aftermarket stocks are avaible. Have fun customizing your rifle and shoot it a lot.

I liked the stock and came with my 10/22. If you don't mind spending the time, I was able to ream the channel out on my stock using deep 3/8" drive sockets and just started out with some really aggressive grit sand paper. It took some doing, but it's done.

In the meantime, if you decide to ream out the barrel channel buy yourself a hogue stock, real cheap for about 70 bucks. This way you can still shoot your 10/22 while you take your time reaming out the stock.

You can enlarge the barrel channel on the stock with a 3/4 drive deep socket wrapped in sand paper. About a 13/16 or 7/8 size deep socket is the size you need. Start with 180 and finish with 220 paper.

If you want to keep the factory stock it will work just fine by using the socket & sandpaper method to widen it. Costs nothing but a couple bucks worth of sandpaper and some elbow grease. Just make sure you seal the unfinished wood after you're done. You'll probably also want to cut off the "lip" at the front of the stock that the barrel band attaches to. I would also recommend bedding the action while you're at it, that made a huge difference on mine.
