B.U.G. opinions needed.

Since my primary carry is a 1911 in 10mm I wanted a Back Up Gun in the same caliber for practical purposes. I looked at some revolvers in 10mm and they were pricey and bulky so I started gravitating towards autos, particuarly the Glock 29.
I'm dead set on the 10mm, can anyone give another example of a small 10mm for a B.U.G.?
Do you own said B.U.G. and could you give me the pros and cons of it?
If anyone owns a G29 can you tell me about the experience you've had?
Have you modded it in any way to fit your hand/carry/lifestyle?
As always I appreciate the knowledge and experience given by the members of this forum.

The 10mm is one of those cartridges that has more recoil than a small gun needs -- kind of like featherweight revolvers in .357. I'd look for a 9mm or a .38 Special revolver for a back up gun.

To be clear, what exactly do you mean? Do you want a "back up gun" as in, your primary is out of service and you want something to CCW instead?
Or do you mean as a "Secondary Gun," to be worn in addition TO the 1911?
If the former, the Glock 29 will probably be the only "compact" that'll fill the bill.
If the latter, then it's a pretty chunky gun to be carrying in addition to the 1911

Vern, I appreciate the advice but I'm strictly looking for a 10mm.
David, by back-up gun I mean one to be carried with my 1911. Chunky doesn't bother me, I have big hands and concealment really won't be a problem for me.

Well, David's right, a G29 is really going to be your only choice, but regardless of hand size, it isn't that small a gun and carrying one large gun plus trying to hide a second medium size gun is going to be uncomfortable and tedious. I always carry two guns (a 1911 and a j-frame), sometimes three (add a P3AT), when on duty, have for years, and would never consider a gun as large as a G29 for a BUG. Too heavy, too bulky, too difficult to hide. Unless you've tried this and are comfortable with it in practice and not just in theory, you may want to take a few other things than caliber into consideration because some ideas don't translate into reality all that well.

How about a matched pair of 1911s? They would be heavy, but would bring commonality of operation to the table. At least one would have to be fitted with an ambidextrous safety. Although shorter and lighter, the G29 is quite thick and "chunky." Personally - if I carry a BUG at all - I like the "big gun/little gun" idea better, with the second gun a pocket auto in (naturally) my pocket. In some situations, the BUG might even be your first "go-to" gun.

This is going to sound weird (and I'll probably regret saying anything because skeptics always know better and will jeer me) but I've actually found a way to comfortably conceal a B.U.G. gun on my upper back. I've practiced with it, can draw it quickly and can cover it up really well. I know it sounds really Hollywood and goofy but for my physical characteristics along with the idea that if for whatever reason my primary carry isn't an option I can draw from a position that not only shows supplicance but is also comfortable even when I sit and drive.
As a side note I'm looking for help so please don't bust my balls. If you can help me great, if you just want to berate me please look elsewhere.

American Derringer model 1 in 10mm. Don't know if they still make it but I remember seeing one a few years back. FYI it will not be comfortable to shoot. Plus it is small enough to be used as an"upper back piece". LOL. Its cool bro. To each his own.

Not a lot of 10mm choices out there. You can go 1911, Glock, or find a used S&W 3rd Gen. The 1076 worked for the FBI (for a couple of years anyway), so it should work for you. I've got a 1076 (and the S&W 610 revolver), both great guns, but bulky & heavy for all day carry.
When I left NJ, concealed carry was not allowed.

What kind of rig do you use?

I may be alone in this, but I've come to the conclusion that my BUG should NOT share operating characteristics with my main carry piece. IOW, if my main carry is a Semi-auto (Glock, HP, 1911, etc), then the BUG should be a double-action revolver.
Reason being that if I became partially incapacitated and lost the use of an arm or hand, the revolver would still be effective in my remaining hand. Given sufficient cover and time, I could still reload it and clear a round that refused to fire. It might be that the main carry piece became non-viable simply because injuries prevented me from loading it or clearing a jam.

I'd like to hear more about your opinion, it sounds interesting.

I have a Utah carry permit and drive to states I can carry in rather often.

I have a set of old school military suspenders that thread through one of my yaqui holsters. It also sits at the proper angle for me to grab and my Bersa doesn't poke out through the top of my shirt. Throw a vest over it and it doesn't print in the least and when I draw I don't sweep anyone. . . . unless you happen to be flying over my head.

The only remotely small 10mm I know of in current production is the Bond Arms Derringer. Its small, but fairly heavy. The Bonds are high quality guns and more accurate than one might expect. They are available in a number of chamberings, including the 10mm. I have one with a .45 ACP barrel and a .45 Colt/.410 Bore barrel. I'm very happy with it.
The Glock 29 is a quality handgun, but I doubt its any easier to carry and conceal than your 10mm 1911. A second 1911 would make about as much sense.
