I found a Rock River with standard trigger and 6 pos buttstock for $319 at a local shop. First off is that a good deal? Seems I could build one cheaper. So is there any reason to get the Rock River over genaric parts for a build? Lastly are there any other lowers I should look at for a fair price? Really want to keep it around $300. Thanks

That price is just okay.
You should be able to build one cheaper.
The Rock will be complete and you don't have to do it yourself.
Look at Stag Arms. You can get a complete lower half for well under $300.
Look at the blemished lowers from Bravo Company. You can get an M4 stocked lower or even a VLTOR Modstocked lower at your budget.

Contact Surplus Ammo and Arms.com and inquire about their lower kit (you build it). Aero Precision lower, DPMS LPK, and TAPCO T6 stock will surprise you.

If you are going to build your own lower, any stripped lower from a reputable manufacturer will do. Just pick your favorite logo or the best price.

New CDNN catalog I got in the mail yesterday has complete ready to roll S&W Chrome lined M4 flat-top carbines for $599 after rebate.

It would be pretty darned hard to build one for that!

I bought a Double Star lower and built my rifle from a kit. The Double Star lower was under $100 when I bought it, and I think they are back under $100 now. I'm guessing it was a value lower, but I have had 0 problems with it. I'll post a pic later.

Aim Surplus or Surplus Ammo & Arms: Aero Precision Lower @ $60-75
Anywhere: Brand Name LPK: $60
DSG Arms: Magpul MOE Kit (mil buffer tube, MOE Stock / Grip / Handguards): $100 + free shipping.

Hard to find a better deal than that.

Buy a good upper (with BCG & charging handle) a la BCM / Spikes and you are in business.

As long as they are mil spec and the holes are in the right places, one lower is as good as the next. I wouldn't go with a complete lower unless you're planning on sticking with the stock trigger group and grip. Since your building it is an option, I'd go that route, unless you're planning to go as cheap as possible.

If you want to keep it on the cheap, you can get a complete Spike's Tactical lower for under $300 and it has a cool spider on the side. From what I've seen, Spike's sells good stuff.

When I build a lower, I tend to have an idea of which way I'm going with it. I usually spend the bulk of the money on the trigger group, the stock and grip.

You can get a complete stag lower reciever for $200. You can also get a complete DSA lower reciever for $200. You can also get a complete Del Ton lower reciever for $200.

I would only pay $300 for a lower reciever to match the brand of the lower to the upper, to increase resale value, and not have a frankenrifle.

See ive never seen a complete Stag lower for $200. They sell them with no buffer tube and stock for about $200. The complete lowers ive seen hover around $250-350. Im not a fan of ordering guns off the internet either. The cheapest FFL charge in my area is $35, plus the price of shipping, and the price of the part or gun. Now RC that sounds like a hell of a deal, but I already have the upper built. Stag flat top upper, Stag iron sights, Bushmaster Hbar 16" barrel, Hakko Panorama holo sight, and UTG forearm rail. Id like a DD Omega rail but need a lower first.

$200 lower + $15 shipping + $35 fee is $250 out the door.

Google: stag complete lower

Post #3 above... depending on the brand lower you select... as low as $164.99 plus shipping and FFL.

Mine went together just fine and fit my upper like a glove. Good quality unit.

The "Surplus Ammo and Arms" are made by Aero Precision. Aero's primary business venture is to make aircraft parts... the lowers are a side business for them.

I've been in the market for a lower myself and have seen several for sale on Gunbroker in the $75-$100 range but just never could pull the trigger and bid on one ...

I've always liked the Bushmaster roll mark, found one at a show last week for $200 OTD, picked up a DPMS parts kit for $55 ... already had a RRA 2-stage trigger and Bushmaster marked collapsable stock from some past project.

Damn you paid $200 for a stripped lower? Bushmaster is a good product, but thats a high price!

$200 was the "Out-the-Door" price ... it was actually $185 + 8% sales tax ... If you look on Gun broker Bushy stripped lowers are bringing around $175 or more + shipping+transfer fee ... complete lowers are $350 and up + shipping+transfer fee

Then there was the whole immediate gratification thing :)

1. Go to your FFL and ask how much they charge to do a transfer. Usually for rifles its like $20-$30.

2. If you agree with his charge then ask him for a copy of his FFL.

3. Then you send that copy (by fax usually) to the place you are buying the lower from.

4. You can either place the order for the lower before or after you send the copy of the FFL. I usually call to make sure they got a copy of the FFL okay.

5. Wait for gun to get to your dealer.

6. Sign paperwork at dealer's.

7. Take rifle home and fondle.

I built my lower assembly.
Sabre Lower=110
Hogue grip=14
Doublestar LPK=75
Bravo Company stock kit=65

That's 264 for a complete lower receiver group. I chose to build mine because I wanted to build it the way I wanted using good quality parts and components. Even after shipping prices and a few mags, I am still under my 300$ price limit.

On a side note, I'm going to get a stag upper assemble from Bravo. After looking at the prices, the stag kit comes out at a heck of a deal. I could get a DSA upper for 275, but I would still need a CH, bolt assembly, and rear sight. It could easily get out of control and end up 600+. That Stag upper has a MI ERS, bolt, CH, and chrome lined 1x9 for 530$

Same here, or could have built one on a budget for under $200 ...

... but I wanted the Bushmaster roll mark.

I can understand that SkyDriver. My first AR was the Bushmaster AR/AK. Got her used for $750 with Hakko sight and 5 mags. Still have it and it shoots great. Zero problems eats everything. Also like the immediate gratification part. I went to the shop today and he said he would do 300. I may do that cause Im still leary on the whole internet order thing. Plus the time taken to build, not to sound lazy. Plus I can get out and shoot the next day.

I second the Surplus Ammo and Arms lower, made by Aero Precision. Aero makes lowers for other big name players too, just with different roll marks applied (obviously).

My lower that is purchased from them is terrific, makes a tight fit to the Aero upper and I was able to finish the complete lower for under $250 with a Daniel Defense premium lower parts kit and an ACE Skeleton stock. The best deal going, IMHO

Aeros products are stamped with a small A are they not?

ThePunisher'sArmory
July 21, 2010, 07:32 PM
Reason I ask is that my upper was said to be a Stag but the only markings I can see is a small capital A in raised print.
