Speaking of yard sales, went to one a couple of weeks ago and found this old cleaver in a box of junk. Bought it for a buck just because I've never had one and thought it was neat. Cleaned some of the rust off with oil and steel wool, and saw a maker's mark. It said WM Beatty and Son, Cast Steel, Chester, with an outline of a cow above it. Looked it up, and as best I can tell was probably made mid to late 1800's. I have it hanging on the wall under my gunrack now. Not the best pic, sorry, had to use my cell phone.

Interesting old cleaver, looks to be in decent shape also. It's amazing what you can sometimes come across at yard sales and flea markets, usually when you're not looking for anything special. On occassion I've come across some pretty decent older knives usually for little or nothing. At one time I found an old bayonet for a german mauser that looked like it had fought and lost both WWI and WWII all by itself. Wire brushed it a bit and it's somewhere in the shop now. I paid all of $5 for it and the fella selling it said he didn't really care if it sold or not, he was just curious about what sort of person would buy a knife in that condition. Didn' really know how to take that statement :(

every rummage saler gets lucky. Nice finds, both Swoter and Old Shooter. I've lucked into a few things myself @ rummages.

It's like panning for gold--You have to sort and throw away lots and lots of gravel for each nugget found. Often I feel I just can't spare the time, but then, often enough when I do, there is something worthwhile there, @ a bargain price.

As to using a cleaver in butchering, I prefere a butcher's saw. A cleaver makes bone splinters which can be sharp. But if the choice were butcher with a cleaver or only knives, I'd sure take the cleaver for the heavy, hard cutting!

Sweet Cleaver give it a good cleaning and polish and sharpening it up and cut away.
