Skunky's "Dual Beretta 92" Post...
Kentucky Rifle
December 7, 2003, 12:02 PM
I read it and thought, "Those Beretta's DO look nice, but I don't think I'd ever buy two copies of the same pistol". HA!
Yesterday, I decided to stop by the "Krispy Kream" and pick up a dozen hot ones and take them out to my regular gunshop and "just visit". Drink coffee. Shoot the "bull". Look at the new guns and listen to the "Christmas buyers". :)
You ALL know that I purchased a new "Duo-Tone" Kahr MK9 less than three weeks ago...because I posted so. I like it. Small, slightly heavy for a pocket gun, but just right for a small belt gun. The weight meant hardly any recoil, even with +P loads. I was a happy guy with my new "Duo-Tone".
~I saw it as soon as I walked down beside the first showcase. A shiny new, all black PM9 with the "Black Diamond" stainless slide. The shop owner (a good friend) walks by and whispers, "If you want that pistol Will, I'll sell it to you for my cost. Just don't tell anybody.") I tried not to look at it. I really did! I asked to see a Sig P239 and a Kel-Tec 9MM. You know~something to take my mind off the new PM9. Somehow, someway, the next moment I was sitting at a desk, filling out the yellow form. Thirty minutes later, I was walking out of that shop with a black Kahr box under my arm which contained the new PM9 ~with a goofy grin on my face.
The moral of my little story (for those of you who are out there smiling at me now--I KNOW you are! I can "feel" it), is to never tell yourself you'd NEVER buy twin guns or anything else from a gunshop---because it might happen~and quickly too!

Isn't imitation the sincerest form of flattery? Then having 2 identical (or at least very similar) guns is flattering ;)

I just don't have the capability to post pictures.
Would someone please post pictures of a Duo-Tone MK9 and a PM9 with a "Black Diamond" stainless slide for me? It'll just take you a few minutes and 45R will be a much happier guy. Heck, I'd like to see these two little Kahrs on the screen too. I'd appreciate it if you'd take the time.
Thanks in advance,

I've always wanted a pair of matched handguns for "movie shots". For a while now I've been thinking to do a CZ-85 Combat and a CZ-75 SA so they would ALMOST be the same gun but not quite. Obviously the 85 would be the off-hand gun since it has the ambidexterous controls.
Or, do the Chow Yun Fat "Replacement Killers". 6 Beretta 92FS' in belt, small of back, and shoulder holsters. No spare mags :D But that would be REALLY pricey. Maybe if I can find a deal in bulk . . .

Ummm...no, all eight of my 1911's are slightly different.
Of course, there is that consecutive serial numbered pair of Colts for which I'm saving:D

Hey! Thanks buddy!
Those are my two Kahr's. Pretty nice, eh? :) The odd thing is that, on my way home, I was POSITIVE that the PM9 was a little smaller or a little more narrow than the Duo-Tone. However, when I got back home and laid the PM9 on the MK9, they were exactly the same size. I STILL felt that something was different so I got out the holster to see if the fit was the same. It was. So <shrug>, optical illusion I guess.
Thanks again for posting the photos.

Actually, I think getting two of the same gun is a good idea. This was something that was brought up when I took my CHL class. The instructor told us that even if a shoot is righteous, that the firearm used would be taken for quite a while, maybe forever, and it would be a good idea to have a second one that could be used untill the first is given back, especially if the shooting involved a gang member. He brought that up, because of the risk of other members of the gang trying to get revenge.
Now if only I could get enough money to purchase two of the same....

its also good in case the first breaks down and you need spare parts which are not commonly availible.

I like El Tejon's theory of 4 copies are the bare minimum.
I only need two more Para P14's and two more Vaquero's.
But I need three more of a whole bunch more.......:(

I wanted slightly different guns, so I could tell them apart at a glance--so my idiot butt doesn't grab the wrong gun, and so I could have a little variety. They still feel a little different, but I need to swap that mag release and change the sights. Oh, and the carbon fiber grips

KR,
I just happen to be in the market for a Kahr! I am considering the PM9 vs the MK9, but I wanted to know how the felt. Recoil, etc.
Can you give us a comparitive review? How is the build quality of the polymer one? Felt weight difference?

I have 2- G19's...3 if you count my Airsoft version!
It makes a lot of sense...
If one goes down you have a spare...one that fits your carry gear and takes the same mags.
One that shoots exactly the same.
One set of spare/replacement parts for both..
One of mine is in the lockbox at home for HD and one is my "Working Gun"
I rotate them so that the round counts are somewhat in sync...but not the same.
Now two of every gun...that is just silly...
Unless there is a BIG flood or something;)

Sure, I'll be happy to do that. Please just realize that I've had both pistols for a very short time. I just came home with the PM9 last saturday and I've only had the MK9 "Duo Tone" for less than a month.
Duo Tone MK9: Nice shooter. Nice on the belt but heavy in the pocket of my jeans. Not much recoil--even with the Speer +P Gold Dots I bought. I like the looks of the black slide. To me, it makes a far better looking pistol than even the highly polished Elite models.
The slide is blackened 4140 tool steel, not stainless. That didn't bother me a bit. In fact, I considered it a "plus". It seems to me that two different types of steel slide over each other more slickly. And this Duo Tone had the slickest moving slide in the case. Felt great, and what a slide SHOULD feel like in operation. Other than that, there's not much to say. There's not been a hint of malfunction, but I only have about 300 rounds through it.
PM9: Another great shooter, even though I have even less rounds through it. Blackened stainless steel slide. (No more indoor range in Louisville so I just go out where there are no people to practice now.) I'm a little "leery" of this type of shooting though. After all, these are not .22's, and the bank I'm shooting into reflects the sound back and I hear an echo of the shot. (I'm using my "Pro-Ears" for hearing protection.) Although it's light, the PM9 isn't a "featherweight". My AirLite Ti revolver feels lighter in the pocket of my jeans when BOTH guns are loaded. The truth is that I bought a nice little cordovan colored Galco holster and wear either Kahr on my black, 1.5 inch RafterS belt. But don't get me wrong. The PM9 is definitely the one to go for if you're looking for a pocket 9MM. All loaded up, it weighs ~18 ounces. Although it really isn't thinner, for some reason the PM9 just "feels" thinner in a pocket too. Recoil here too, isn't a problem at all. As a matter of fact, recoil was much easier than I thought it would be. I figure that Kahr put some thought into the recoil factor and came up with a design that compensated for it somehow. I've even heard that the Kahr's chambered for .40 S&W aren't too bad. I've looked it over closely and there aren't any funky looking mold marks. The only negative I can find is a couple of small light scratches on the slide serrations that, under the right light, let the stainless steel slide show a tiny bit of silver.
Both guns: For me, the worst thing is the longer magazines. You only get one extra round but the mag just hangs out of the grips looking pretty silly for a pocket pistol. I'm going to try to trade them both for the flat bottomed 6 round mag. The sights are good on both models, but I'm going to have Trijicon night sights installed on the PM9.
Hope all this helps you pick the right model. So far, I like both.

I guess I DID "break the deal" by posting it here. You're right. However, I didn't say WHICH gun shop. :) In all honesty, I've purchased 15 to 20 guns from this shop and the owner gives me a generous break on everything I buy. I appreciate that a lot. He appreciates my business, and shows it. Although, he actually DID give me a super deal on my PM9. I offered to pay "my" regular price but he said, "No, Will. You're a good customer and this is just a little reward for that fact". HUMmmmm. I told him about two or three years ago that when my wife comes in, "Give her anything she wants and I'll pay for it the next time I come in". I wonder if I've got a big Christmas bill out there he hasn't showed me yet? :D
As far as the Krispy Kreme goes...how can I put this? Well it's a different, sorta "weird" place now. FERNS sit around the small tables. I DON'T want to see any more friggin' ferns! I wasn't the only guy who thought of Claymores when I looked at those ferns!!! Same great hot doughnuts, but the STORE has changed. It's open 24 hours a day--so when the demons came and I was scared to go back to sleep, I'd get on my motorcycle, ride over there in the middle of the night, and wait for daylight. The store would be full of people smoking, eating hot doughnuts, drinking coffee, talking about firearms...hiding from their OWN demons (Other Old Soldiers mostly, who had ridden their own motorcycles over.)
The Krispy Kreme store changed the very second the "No Smoking" sign went up on the door. It's some type of dumbass law here now. Seems like the only places people are smoking are in the gun shops.
Sheesh--I'm rambling. 4 nights and counting-no sleep yet. I'm goin' for the record!

Are you talking about the original Krispy Kreme on Bardstown Road?
Kentucky Rifle
December 11, 2003, 09:53 AM
That's the one. On Bardstown Road. I hadn't been back for a couple years. I stopped to buy a dozen "hot ones" to take out to the gun shop and I was the only one in LINE! I didn't even look towards the "dining room". Didn't want to see what it had become. I "forced" myself to look at the big doughnut machines through the glass. Actually, that was pretty interesting. They were turning out hot "jellies" at the time. I kept thinking, "How can they sell all those jelly doughnuts"? I bought "one to go". It was great. Lucky I had extra napkins.:)

KR I haven't been back to Louisville since I left in 1999, but I am planning on visiting when I go to Knob Creek in the spring. We now have KK out here in Seattle but they were never my havorite. Pattersons Bakery in Okolona, across from Souther High School, has (had?) the best doughnuts I have ever eaten.
What I AM going to visit though is Ollie's Trolley on 3rd St and Joe's OK Bayou off Hursbourne Lane ! Although i would like to go back to Kalein's and get a cheeseburger. (for those who don't know, Kalein's INVENTED the cheeseburger)

If you remember all those places, you MUST know where I buy most guns. "Tilford's Discount Guns" on the Outer Loop? Best place to buy a firearm in Louisville. Do you know the store?
Wow! This is great! Remember the sign in front of Kalein's that has the waving guy with the sign which says--"If you can't stop in, at least wave". :) When I was in school, I used to live in a no heat/no AC "attic apartment" about three or four houses down from K's. Across from St. Agnes on Newburg Road.

Yeppers I was buying from Tilford when he was still doing it out of his house. I had my FFL about a year before he got his.
He's a real stand-up guy. Last time I was in his place he was still on Old Shepherdsville Road.
I was living just over a mile away from him around Outer Loop & Old Shep.
I was making my living loading and selling ammo & guns at shows all over KY, IN & OH.
He was still working at GE (I believe) and selling out of his house by appointment. He had a nice big ad in Bargain Mart every week.
We both bought a lot of trade-ins from Doug Keisler when he was still over in Greenville IN.

The last time (and it was some time ago) I went down Shepardsville road, The old building still had the "Tilfords" sign up. And, you're exactly right. Tilford would work all day at GE and then come home and sell $300,000.00+ worth of guns from his house. Listen Blues, I hate to be the one who tells--but do you know the the elder Tilford is dead now? He was ALWAYS nice to me, but one day I went in and his son told me that he had died. I'd better fill you in on the rest too. The elder Tilford's wife got sick shortly afterward. (Six months, I think.) The son, Jack, took her to the hospital (I think it was Audubon) and the tests were run. The doc came in and said that she definitely "DID NOT have lung cancer". The doc said she had a case of severe "bronchitis". Three weeks later, she too was dead. It was indeed advanced lung cancer. (I'm not sure how the doc could misread he films like that. Perhaps the cancer was so bad and SO big that it looked like a lung infection. I just don't know.) Anyway, the younger Tilford (Jack) took over the store and gun business. He's done a great job and we've become good friends.
Good selection out there at the store on "The Outer Loop". Rifles & shotguns too.
He's a little short on leather, but he stocks reloading supplies.
<Dammit>--I made myself feel bad.... Mrs. Tilford always treated me good--even when I was just looking. Jack and his wife Marty pretty much give me the run of the store. I can go behind the counter and pull out the guns I want to see and "feel". They're as nice to me as the parents were.

If you left Louisville in 1999, the deaths had to occur right after you took off. Had to be just about the same time.
The new "Tilford's" is located at 3411 Fern Valley Rd. (Almost to Preston St.) It's on the north side of the road in a yellow building right beside a big black "Cosmopolitan Limo" place. And you're right. Tilford's is a great shop with GREAT prices. Very low key & customer friendly. No pressure to buy. (Except those great prices! :) )

Fern Valley & The Outer Loop are "side by side". It's pretty silly not to be able to discern the difference in the names of two major Louisville roads, but I get it wrong a lot.
