New (to me) FN Mauser needs front sight. Help!!

I bought a nice FN Mauser sporter by Firearms International and the previous owner had removed the open sights and lost them. I'm trying to find some replacements but can't find a front ramp that seems like it will fit. It used a single screw and the barrel diameter is only .575 at the screw. Most ramps I have found either use multiple screws or are for larger contour barrels. Any help besides "drill some more holes" would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Brownell's would be your best bet.

Most established gunsmiths have a bunch of sights that they have around from repair or replacement jobs.

Haven't had any luck with either one of those. I'm going to call Williams today and see if they even make one. Looks like I may have to whittle one myself.

I will be very surprised if Brownell's doesn't have a sight that fits. William's Shorty Ramp should work great. It is a one screw mount and comes in a variety of heights and barrel diameters.<http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=16148/Product/SHORTY_DOVETAIL_RAMP

I'd give NECG a call. They make one that is made to sweat on that would just need to be drilled and countersunk to be screwed on. I suspect you can special order one from them machined to the radius you need. They are top notch folks. That rifle deserves a nice steel base like it once had. My first rifle, bought in 1976, was a 270 FN imported by FI. It has since been sold but it was a fine shooter.

You could call Brownell's and ask what you need. Tech support is 1-800-741-0015. M-F 8:30-4:30 CST.

bobs gun parts (http://www.gun-parts.com/mauser/) used to have the fn front sight, you'll need to email them to make sure they are still in stock.
numrich had them at one time but they weren't listed under fn they were listed as under miscellaneous rifle sights

Thanks for the new ideas guys, I'll check with the various places. My thoughts were like Boxhead. This gun deserves a little effort to get it back to it's former glory.

What type of rear sight does it have?

They removed the rear sight as well. Hole spacing matches the Williams WGOS.

I suspected it was a Williams Guide Open Sight. I would(if it was me) get a WGOS for the rear properly matched to a WG Shorty Ramp and blade. If you want steel you can go with the 3 leaf (folding) Express rear sight and a barrel band sight ramp such as a Precise Metalsmithing style.

I think I'm gonna go the Williams route but I'm still concerned about the barrel contour for the ramp. The smallest I've found was for a .625". Mine is .575". I'm not sure if .050" is enough to notice or if the ramp can be adjusted slightly. I forgot today was saturday so I haven't got in touch with Williams.

Call the Brownell tech number above and give them your diminsions and they will tell you what will fit.

Though I am in the Middle East for a month or two I believe I can fix you up with a nice, "proper" blued steel rear base. It would accept any standard dovetail rear sight. I would need to have the screw spacing to confirm. You would need to have patience 'til I get back. ;-) I'd send it gratis if it will work. This sight from Bob's Gunshop (linked below) is what the later FN Browning's came with. It is a fine sight. The Williams will work ok, you can take a dowel or drill bit and coarse crocus cloth and work the radius a bit to closely fit you barrel. Do know though that they are a "cheapy" kind of base IMO. I have used them and have one right now on my Marlin Guide Gun.

Here's is a shot of my FN (30-06) that is an original gun built by FN with no import marks. Note there is no Monte Carlo comb, a nice classic stock. It came with a soldered front sight base and no rear sight as it used a reciver sight mounted on the rear bridge. Mine was missing said sight but Bob's had one, a pretty slick little devise.

Boxhead, I'm in no rush and will probably spend the next month or two working with loads using a scope. The gun is in .300 WM and the open sights will be mainly because I feel they NEED to be there. I truely appreciate the offer but I couldn't do it unless I have something to trade for it. The hole spacing on the gun is .5625". PM me here anytime. Beautiful rifle by the way!!!

Thanks to everyone who has pointed me in the right direction. I think I can get this done now. It's HELL doing research online using dial-up getting booted off every 15 minutes.

Just FYI,I have the front ramp like the one on Boxhead's FN. It sweats on. If you decide to go that route,I give you this ramp(no blade or hood). I also have a steel base for rear dovetail sight but it has a much wider screw hole spacing.
