If they absorb moisture, and you have high seasonal variations, would leaving them wet (silica type, not salt) during the winter (Alaska) or during the summer somewhere like Arizona help to maintain a constant humidity to help prevent wood damage?
I personally use desiccant and wax when I store, but I know that there is a HUGE difference in humidity from summer to winter, part of the reason you are supposed to loosen you action screws when you store.
Is this just a fact of life or can/do you try to maintain a constant level?
