Can the studs on Remington shotgun magazine tubes be removed so that they can accept the magazine extensions?

With judicious grinding with a Dremel or a slow work with a crescent-shaped file.........yes.

Field strip it good, and when you're done, do an exceptional cleanup and it'll work like a champ.

That's the way you would do it outside of Kali...... ;)

Good Luck.
Cheers,
Mike

If you remove the mag tube dimples there will be nothing to retain the mag tube spring retainer and thus the mag tube spring itself. Without the mag tube spring retainer the factory mag tube cap will loosen under recoil (it has teeth that engage the mag tube spring retainer). Every aftermarket 870 mag tube extension I've seen has small holes in the end cap to engage a spring loaded ball in the bbl (absent in the 870 Express and similar model bbls) so you'll have to find a way to prevent the mag tube extension from loosening under recoil.

The Dremel works, it's quicker, easier, and cleaner to just drill the dimples out.

There is a clamp that stabalizes the factory magazine extension to the barrel on the 870 Express HD. this clamp keeps the factory magazine extension from backing out.

Get yourself something like the Scattergun Technologies(wilson combat) side sling adapter... or get one included free when buying a side sling from CQB Solutions.

The side sling adapter from Scatgun Tech. has a little ballbearing staked into it that interfaces with the concave dimples of most popular end caps(even the extensions) out there so that it shouldn't loosen under recoil. This serves the same purpose as the staked in ball bearing at the end of the barrel's magazine tube support ring or whatever it's called.
