Is it possible to remove the key lock internals from new S&W revolvers without affecting the operation of the revolver?

why? Just leave it unlocked. I have a key lock on my taurus pt92. I just leave it unlocked.

I'd give a thought to the legal ramifications . . . I think along the lines of Ayoob (In the Gravest Extreme I believe was the title) - inherent to our society is the fact that "self defense" includes legal concerns that encompass the equipment you use to protect yourself.

"Hair triggers", customized weapons, hand loads, etc, could all be used against you in a court of law.

I agree with club soda - leave it unlocked. If the key really offends you, throw it away!

It would leave a hole in the side of the frame and a funny-shaped hammer channel (I assume you want to remove the little Rube Goldberg flag, too?)

Truly, that little "pock" is NOT very attractive, but don't let it bother you.
Just leave it unlocked and soon, you'll forget that it's there. The only thing that reminds me that the "pock" is on my newer S&W's is that I carry the "key" on my ring. (Just in case. Of WHAT, I don't have a clue.)

One possibility comes to mind, although it's a stretch.

If one were in an accident, arrested or other situation where you couldn't remain in control of a CCW, you could unload it and use the manual lock to assure that no one else could use the gun.

I remember this being discussed at length at TFL, consensus seemed to be it would not work, and if ya hate it that bad get a used one without the lock. When I had one I just ignored it and left it unlocked........tom

Annoying maybe, but I'd do as has been already suggested...to unlcok it & forget about it or purchase a vintage version w/o the lock...good luck!

The lock is easily removed by anyone used to the S&W mechanism. But, like the others, I don't see the need.

Thanks for the responses. I don't own a S&W of any kind. I was considering buying one and was wondering about the trigger lock.

My concern is based on Murphy's Law, if the lock could malfunction and prevent the gun from firing at a critical moment it probably will at some point.

Also, the locks are going to be a permanent feature of new S&W's for all time now (in my opinion). There's no way they could possibly delete them now from a product liability standpoint. If they did and some kid somewhere shot themself or another, they'd be wide open for the charge that they were evil corporate SOB's trying to save a few pennies at the expense of "the childen" etc.

If I owned S&W I'd at least design them to be easy to remove.

Well, I'll swim against the tide: I took it out of my 66, just cause it was a piece of uneccessary clutter in there. Several thousand rounds later, I've had no adverse effects. Don't know if it had any effect on the trigger, but it is definitely the best I own.
