Volunteer 'Human Shields' to Head for Iraq
Tue Jan 21,12:20 PM ET Add Top Stories - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Andrew Cawthorne

LONDON (Reuters) - A first wave of mainly Western volunteers will leave London this weekend on a convoy bound for Iraq to act as "human shields" at key sites and populous areas in case of a U.S.-led war on Baghdad.

"The potential for white Western body parts flying around with the Iraqi ones should make them think again about this imperialist oil war," organizer Ken Nichols, a former U.S. marine in the 1991 Gulf War (news - web sites), told Reuters.

His "We the People" organization will be sending off a first group of 50 human shields from the London mayor's City Hall building Saturday, part of a series of departures organizers say will involve hundreds, possibly thousands, of volunteers.

Nichols' planned human shield convoys are one of several such efforts around the world to mobilize activists in Iraq as a deterrent against military strikes on Baghdad.

In Bucharest, more than 100 Romanian diehard communists said Tuesday they would travel by bus to Iraq to act as human shields in case of a U.S. attack.

Members of the tiny Romanian Workers Party, which took the mantle of ousted dictator Nicolae Ceausescu's defunct Communist party in 1995, said they would set off next month to support "the cause of the people."

The new human shield plans revive memories of the 1991 Gulf War when President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) forcibly held thousands of Western hostages after his invasion of Kuwait.

Many were put near sensitive sites in a bid to stop attacks that proved futile, although there are not thought to have been any casualties among the Western hostages.

Baghdad also used Iraqis, alongside some foreign volunteers, as shields in 1998 against U.S.-British bombing.

Nichols' groups intend to drive through Europe and the Middle East en route to Iraq. The first will travel in a pair of double-decker buses, led by a car with a white peace flag on it.

"We are on the verge of something big," said volunteer Christiaan Briggs, 26, from New Zealand. He argued that the stream of human shield volunteers was symptomatic of radicalizing anti-war opinion around the world.

"People know this is wrong. It is just so blatantly transparent how the U.S. is trying to impose its hegemony."

PROPAGANDA ACCUSATIONS

"We the People" organizers said the self-financing human shield volunteers had come forward from a range of Western nations including the United States, Britain, Ireland, Switzerland, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and Denmark.

There were also some volunteers from Muslim nation Turkey.

The major rallying point for Muslims, however, is in Iraq's neighbor Jordan. There, a campaign led by leftist parties and civic bodies is seeking 100,000 shield volunteers.

Baghdad has welcomed the plans, but volunteers smart at suggestions that they are handing a propaganda gift to Saddam.

Washington and London are sending troops to the Gulf and threatening military action against Saddam unless he admits to possessing weapons of mass destruction and disarms.

"It's laughable to say that we are working for Saddam when it was the UK and the U.S. who gave him his biological and other weapons in the first place," Nichols said.

"The hypocrisy is mind-blowing. The biggest threat to world security at this moment is (U.S. President) George W. Bush."

Nichols said his involvement in the human shield program was in part "penance" for his participation in the Gulf War when a U.S.-led force drove Saddam's troops out of Kuwait.

But those forcibly used as human shields by Saddam in the past are stunned others are volunteering to do it.

"Putting yourself in danger is not going to help at all," said John Nicol, a British air force flyer shot down in 1991 and later paraded on Iraqi television. He was moved around by the Iraqis to various potential targets and experienced allied bombing nearby.

"I doubt it would be a deterrent to any attack," Nicol, a journalist and military analyst since leaving the air force, told Reuters. "I am shocked that anyone would want to put themselves in such a situation."

But it is one of the inevitable consequences of living in a free society. One other consequence is that you are accountable for your actions. If they do act as human shields they could become extremely accountable. Their choice!

Look at it this way; if they get in the way of a bomb on a legitimate target then at least the right people are being cleansed from the gene pool!

The only real problem I have is twofold:

(1) Can we send our felons?
(2) Can we send some politicians?

Their loss is no loss.

Throw them in jail, suicide is illegal.

Hey it's their life but me thinks that many will rethink the folly of their ways when the first building across the street vaporizes.

As I read this my minds eye pictured a parade of Lemmings headed to the sea and their destruction.

Hopefully if we do go to war, Bush will have the guts to say, get out of the way, or get dead.

Two weeks after the "war" is over, J. Jackson will claim to have been there.

If SH decides to leave the country and there is no "war", I only hope someone in Rainbow Push informs J or he'll claim he was a human shield anyway.

And the press will believe him!

I'm curious to know how many of the current crop acted as "human shields" when we were bombing the :cuss: out of Serbia? Oh, wait, they were Christians, bombing them is OK. :fire: :fire:

Too bad there isn't some way to give each of them a homing device for some of our guided bombs/missles. Give each of them a "special" GameBoy to keep them entertained while on their "humanitarian" mission.

First you have Scott Ritter, former Marine, taking money from the Iraqis to make a movie about how they're not making chem weapons. Turns out he has short eyes, too, and has been arrested for soliciting minors on the internet.

Now you have Ken Nichols Keith or whatever his name is. Saw him on Fox & Friends this morning. Apparently he's a former Marine too. His hair is sticking up funny, he's all twitchy, and went on about American genocide against the Hawaiian people. There's a warrant out for his arrest, apparently. Claims he's defending the Constitution, and is concerned with civil rights, yet he lives in England and denounces the Unitd States.

Yeesh. Why is it THESE guys that always get the air time? I'm sure there's a bunch of REAL Marines that want to beat the crap out of both of these guys.

Let 'em go. It's a free country.

Speaking of Serbia. I brought this up in my International Relations class.

Same situation as Iraq. You have a country that did not attack the United States (though Iraq has shot at our aircraft), and yet the President decides to wage a preemptive war to bring about a regime change.

Basically, the same situation. No hippie protestors waving tambourines outside of the White House then (I'm not stereotyping, I saw it on tv). Funny what you can get away with when you're considered to be "liberal" and "progressive", huh?

I saw that schmuck (ex-Marine turned human shield) on FoxNews this morning. The guy has a $10,000 warrant out for his arrest and has renounced his citizenship yet still talked about "our democracy" and what "we should be doing." Made me sick. The guy was so argumentative and ignorant that he lost all credibility in no time at all. Maybe he'll go splat for his lost cause.

I wonder if Saddam might decide to make some reporter chum... blow up/dismember some of the "human shields" and then spread them thickly in front of bombed buildings for the news crews to photograph.
I can't wish that sort of harm on anyone but I'm afraid they won't come to their senses until they hear the whistling noise. Too late to do anything but besan los kulos adios. :what:

This is all funny and great - ha ha - until some poor grunts in country get the word that 'American Civilians' are pinned down in some remote corner of this festering pile of rubble. Then our devoted soldiers get to do a house-to-house fight ala Blackhawk Down or Drew Dix to go recover these nitwit humanshields. I will be pissed as hell if one of our guys takes a hit trying to save some ungrateful treasonous lemming POS that will probably just denounce the soldier's effort when they get back safe and sound. This makes me really :cuss: :fire:

You know.. about the stupidest place to be in a gunfight is betweeen the people shooting at each other.

Legality aside.. sounds like a very stupid thing to do. Last time Saddam took hostages, and we didn't stop. Doubt we would this time either.

Imagine this scenario:

"Firefox one-niner do you have the target in sight?"

"uh negative Big Joe, looks like we have a crowd obscuring the view"

"Firefox, uh.. what is this crowd wearing?"

"damndest thing Big Joe, they have peace signs, are holding hands, looks like a bunch of rejects from the Rainbow Gathering"

"Firefox can you smell patchouli?"

"uh roger that Big Joe, we have boucoup patchouli"

"Ok firefox aim your mortars 100 meters behind the crowd and fire for effect.. thats GOT to be an important target!"

Actually, the EX-Marine (and I'm sure all the REAL Marines on this forum will appreicate me calling him that) that's heading up this group apparently renounced his US citizenship.

So he's not a traitor anymore, just a moron. *shrug*

Nightcrawler, This guy is a real piece of work. He's renounced his citizenship, and therefore cannot have a residence in the US. He has a house in Hawaii and claims to be a resident of the sovereign nation of Hawaii which he claims is no longer part of the United States and is an independant nation. Until he relinquishes his property in Hawaii, he's still an American Citizen.

the US will be nice and try to avoid killing these people. we will try to shoot around them, indirect fire behind them, get them out of the way, etc.

the iraqis will just shoot them, mortar them, etc, and blame it on us for their propganda machine.

europe, the press, and the US blissninnies will believe iraq, making it harder for us to finish the job due to a drop in public support; afterall, iraq would never kill people trying to stop the US's war, would they?

Don't know if it's true but I was reading this morning that they want to send in 800 cruise missles in the first 2 days of the war. I think they called it "shock and awe". If true, that's about twice as many as we used the last time. Human shields won't have much chance. The last I heard cruise missles didn't discriminate and while we are told they are reasonablly accurate, I wouldn't want to be around one when it went off. As that great philosopher MR. T would say, "I pity the fool"!
