Just one gun...

I am considering trying my hand at training to get in some low level competitions as a hobby. Assuming you can buy only 1 gun for less than $1000, what 1 gun would allow you to compete in the most events? Let's also assume I have all the shotguns I'll ever need.

G17 can shoot a couple categories in GSSF matches, IDPA and USPSA.

AR-15 or a service handgun (Glock/M&P/xD).

Either one will let you compete in several types of competition.

What kind of competition do you think you want to compete in?

AS in all things involving guns, and frankly most tools, know your mission first. Then choose the best available weapon/tool.

Any other method, short of dumb luck, will have you chasing your tail. (nothing wrong with dumb luck)

Good luck.

Now I get your shotgun reference. Get a G-17, a fistfull of mags and go to town.

I got a Garand to shoot highpower matches. I can shoot NRA Highpower, Service Rifle, and Garand matches. The CMP special grades are just under $1,000 and the service grade is more like $600.

You could get a national match AR and do the same thing. The nice thing about the AR is you could get a separate upper for the NRA Highpower match that is more competetive.

If you want the widest cross-section of matches, go for a handgun.

With a single stack 1911, you could compete in IDPA, USPSA, Steel Challenge, EIC Bullseye matches, and probably a couple of others.
