While cleaning my rifle, I noticed a scratch on one of the groves in the rifling. Will a scratch hurt anything?

Will it firing rounds though the barrel polish out over time?

Possibly, but more likely just fill it with copper or lead.

Growing up in New Mexico I found that sand and dust gets everywhere.
I still swab the bore with a dry patch right before I shoot to knock stuff out of the bore that can cause those scratches.

Which would be better- lead or copper bullets?

You could always try some of the various Fire Lapping abrasive bullets to polish it out. I've never used them but some folks claim they're great.
Here's just one of several.

I haven’t even shot it yet…it’s used, but new to me :) plus it’s a 45 LC.
