I would have to pick .44 magnum. I shoot for recreation and I also hunt. Out of the handguns I own, it fits the bill for either. However, if you take hunting out of the equation, .45 definitely. (The .44 gets kind of expensive to shoot alot, since I don't reload.)

10mm of course, due to its versatility, effectiveness and I can carry 16 of em in my Glock 20 :D

That's like asking which is your favorite child.

I like several of them equally as well. Hard to choose just one.

I like the 9mm since it is inexpensive to shoot, at least until I start reloading .45s.

Actually, I like all the ones I have and all the ones I don't have too. :)

45 Colt.
It was my first center fire handgun cartrige.
It will do anything I want or need. From targets to hunting. And it's big and easy to load. I don't fumble with 'em like I do little rounds.

Yeah it was a hard choice.

I shoot more 9mm and my 357 is more powerful.. but the 45 acp still won for me.

It is similar to asking about your favorite child. That said, .45 Colt. I can load it heavy, light, or anything in between, or I can switch cylinders and shoot .45 ACP.

9mm for me, 45 comes a distant second... literally! ;):neener:

I picked other since my answer is most of the above plus some.

My current favorites are 9mm and 45ACP.

I would like to add 10MM, 38/357 mag, 38 super, 44 special, 22lr, and 45 Colt to my handgun battery.

So many calibers, so little time:)

My favorite is the .357 magnum. I load it very lightly for target shooting, and pack a (used) Smith & Wesson model 60. I like the .44 magnum nearly as well, but full power loads are hard on my wrist.

The question was "PISTOL" cartridges not revolver cartridges. Hense my response was the 40 S&W rather than 44 Spcl whihc is my favorite "REVOLVER" cartridge. Huge difference.....!

.357 Mag.

Everything else could go in the garbage, but I won't get rid of my .357s.

Gila George,

Pistol is a generic term that can mean EITHER a revolver OR a semi-automatic.

Over the past 50 years or so it's come to be more closely associated with semi-autos, but calling a revolver a pistol is both correct and proper.

9mm for me since its cheap and effective. Kudos to the .357 Mag and .45 ACP though.

I shoot the .45acp more accurately than the other calibers I own.

Followed closely by the 9mm.

j. All of the above :what: ? Seriously, I enjoy 45 acp, 45 super, 9mm, 357 sig, 38 super, and 10mm...so I hit a few on the list :scrutiny:

January 23, 2003, 01:30 AM
I chose .357 but the 9mm is a close second because of the range of guns chambered for it and the cheap ammo. .357 is accurate and powerful and you can shoot .38s in them. Whats not to like?

if this is an "only one gun" survey, the .41 maggie.

if i need anything larger to kill whatever, im bringing a GUN, and it will be a yard long with fierce recoil.

otherwise, any ole handgun will satisfy me. like em all.

To steal a line from a TFL member, "Make mine lean, mean and 9x19":
It's fast, accurate, cheap, easy to find(unlike some calibers): so cheap I don't need to drop hundreds of bucks on reloading and, after seeing what a standard pressure Sellier&Bellot 115g did to a piece of 1/16" steel and a few phonebooks, I'm not falling for that "underpowered" line.
I like .38 Sp., .45 ACP, .44 Mag., .22, .380...blah, blah, too, but, is the easy one to fine. Oh, yeah....minimal recoil is great for quick follow-up shots. O.K., I'm done:rolleyes:

.22LR of course (but I voted .45ACP)

"...(sic)and 9mm is the easiest one to find..."

And, no, this is NOT a sleazy attempt to build up my total posts(!)

No, it shows that you haven't yet found the button labelled "edit" in the lower right corner of your posts. ;)

BTW, I voted 9mm. It's a sufficient, powerful and fast caliber, available in all kinds of bullets weighs from 95 to 158gr, with all kinds of bullet types. Cheap ammo is always available.
And it's the caliber of my only handgun, so it must be my favorite. ;)

Boy, that was a toss up!! Until I can find out what the heck is going on with my G36, if anything, I'm carrying the MK9. But right now, I got the PPK!!!

45acp because it works the best in my favorite gun the 1911 and it will do anything I need to do with a pistol.

My favorite would have to be the 40 S & W out of my G-23. The .357 mag would be a close second.

Well see, your subject says Favorite Pistol Ctg, but then in the post you said centerfire only. So, I can't say .22 Long Rifle.
That is by far the most fun and versatile cartridge around.

But, to play by the rules, I'd go with the 9x19 in autos, and the .38 Spl in realguns.... whooops, wheelguns. ;) Sorry, them's my roots showin'. ;)

45 ACP. Time proven abilities on paper and more serious targets. Main limitation I see is reduced capacity and that isn't a liability if you hit what you aim at. If the 45 ACP disappeared, I'd go with either 38 Super, 9x23 or 10mm.

I don't handgun hunt. If I did, I would probably lean towards either a 41 Magnum or a 44 Magnum.

I voted 357 Magnum, but 45 Colt and 45ACP are close runners up.

Mine used to be .357 Magnum but, I would have to say .45 Colt now... I like the larger bullet with less felt recoil out of my Super Redhawk... Either would /have served in many capacities

I said .45 ACP but .357 is just about on equal footing. I would have chosen both if I could but .45 edges out .357 because I shoot it a bit better.

I bought a Super Redhawk in .454 Casull/.45 Colt due to it's versatility. I handgun hunt a lot. The .454 is not just a powerhouse, it shoots very flat, so I don't have to compensate much within the distance I am able to see and shoot. I have taken elk, wild boar, deer and other critters. I have taken rabbits with downloaded .45 Colt wadcutters, which leave a nice hole, but don't blow up the rabbit. It's fairly cheap to shoot if you handload, which I do not just to save money, but because I can't find all the loadings I want.

At the moment it's the 9mm Para, but I think it will change once I get my reloading setup.
10mm is waiting for me... :D

With the proper ammunition selection, the 9mm, .357Sig, .40 S&W or .45 ACP can do the job with good efficiency. There can be no argument about the capability of the .357 Mag to perform admirably.

I just like the ability of the 10mm to combine the best desires of capacity and power into a package, that for me, is not difficult to conceal or control.

As I said, a personal coice, not a flame or poke in the eye to anyone else's choice.

9mm for economy. Also .22
.45 for fun.

January 26, 2003, 12:26 AM
Hands down .357mag. For defensive use I'd be more likely to use .38 or .38+P and I use .38 more in practice since its so cheap but I LOVE the magnums. Nothing puts the same kind of smile on my face.

For autos (and runner up overall) I like 9mm for all the reasons others have said. Cheap practice ammo yet with premium ammo it is every bit as effective as just about any other service caliber.

If it was financially independent it would be a toss up between 9mm and .45acp for autos.

Just going by volume and pure-funness-to-shoot, the .22LR. 9mm Para after that.

Had to vote other. Neither of my top two choices was available.

.44 Special and .38 Special.

If I had to stick to the list, it would be .357 Magnum.

'Nuther 'other' vote. My personal favorite's .30 Carbine. My Automag III is my hands-down winner as favorite shooting handgun.

It has a power-to-weight/recoil balance that is nothing short of magical. .30 Carbine makes a dandy pistol round.

45 ACP, 38 Super (9x23) 7.62x25, and 9x18 Makarov do not have a 9x19 Luger right now so I didn't list.

357 SIG cheap to reload and very accurate.

.357 SIG is my favorite, for pure shooting fun it's tough to beat. It's followed closely by the 9mm due to my love for the greatest pistol ever made the BHP.

I belong to the "Cult of the 45acp" chambered in the venerable
1911.

After that I will have to vote for the 9mm Makarov chambered in the "Pistolet Makarova" of course. I am particularly attached to my two Bulgarian "Circle 10" 's.

My 9 Para is fun and well made but it just doesn't turn me on!:neener:
