Okay, nobody laugh.
I got a real heavy belt by DKNY at TJ Maxx for $10.
Its solid leather and as heavy as a Don Hume belt.

I bought a Dickies brand work belt at Walmart for $9.99. Works great for my Colt 1911 in a Desantis Inner Piece IWB holster.

You can get them from holster makers typically, they tend to be pricey but are MUCH more rigid than a normal belt. I have one from Galco.

Ok, just ordered a comp tac C-TAC holster. http://www.comp-tac.com/ct_ctac.html
Now, they have a christmass special where they will do free color upgrades. Tell me, are most 1.5" thick belts black or brown? Because I will upgrade to a brown color if that would go better with most products. Also, what do you think of their "C" clips?

Uncle Mike's, polymer sandwiched between layers of that durable nylon-based fake leather. Inexpensive ($40), durable, stiff and good looking.

my $10 is solid black leather (it measures almost 1/4" thick) looks nice with a simple buckle (only downside is it say DKNY Jeans on the buckle).

I had a Galco for a long time...fella shot himself trying quick draw and I used it to hold my shirt ( and other's shirts )as a pressure bandage en-route to ER...kinda figure all that stuff not much good once ER got through with it.
Currently Using a Eddie Bauer and LL Bean heavy, wide and thick belt(s).

Another Wal-Mart work belt fan here. I've bought Alessi and other "quality" belts before, but since I discovered the Wal-Mart work belts, I haven't bought anything else. They work just fine with a holster.

deliver to my door. I hate to shop...especially this time of year. I pride myself on not having been to WW or a Mall in loooong time.
Farmer's supply with Carhart, Dickkies and the like will have good leather ...especially if any tack stocked. I bet they are less infested...with this madness going on...

I just ordered a Don Hume for $45 delivered, from MidSouth Uniform.
I cruised Walmart first, but couldn't find work belts.
Are they supposed to be in men's clothing, tools, or what?
I looked all over.
I did see some heavy leather belts at mall last night, at American Eagle, and one of those custom belt makers that had a little kiosk set up.
The custom belts were $35 plus tax. They were thick, but not lined.
Not sure about the price of the AE belts.
For the price difference, I'll go with a dedicated pistol belt.
I would like to be able to find the work belts though.

I'd suggest a purpose-made gun belt, especially if you want your pants to stay up. ;)

There is no way that the work belts they sell at my local Wal-Mart would work as a gun belt. Way too thin and nowhere near stiff enough. I'm guessing they don't carry the sort that everybody here is talking about.
For value, it's hard to beat the Don Hume belts.

Most of the folks from the Walmart-work-belt crowd haven't ever had the pleasure of wearing a belt specifically made for carrying a gun so they don't have anything to compare to.
If all you are carrying is a small pistol, fine but if you are carrying a 24+ oz. steel 1911 around, get a real belt. There's a reason they cost over $50. You get what you pay for.

Desantis makes a nice belt for $60-70.
The Wilderness Instructor belt ia around $40 and comes in different colors now.
Both are Gun belts and are well made.

What a huge difference this makes...
I like these more than leather. I have the '5 stitch' model, and it is very stiff and easy to use. Works great with my CTAC and other holsters.

a number of non-purpose-made heavy belts, wide belts, etc. I finally sprang for the "Urban Gun Belt" (UGB) from Bulman Gunleather. It's 1-1/4" wide, very stiff and strong, and I'll never go back. It's worth ever penny of its $95 price tag. My pistols are secure and comfortable and well-concealed, even in office clothes. If you carry, it's worth your while to get a proper belt. My .02

Rafter S (www.raftersgunleather.com), $45 for simple cowhide.
I've only seen their work in Elephant and Shark (wearing an Elephant belt right now), but I wouldn't hesitate to order some plain Cow gear if cost were more of an issue.

When buying "off the rack" at Walmart, tractor supply, sears, etc....be sure the belt is doubled and stiched or it won't last. It may carry your gun fine for a couple of months, but as the leather softens and wears it will not support the gun properly.
Another good source for belts is your local saddle shop. Most makers will build belts to suit. Usually reasonably priced as well.

I'm one of those Walmart Dickies belts fans.
They are hard to find, I found the last one in the store last time I was there. It was next to socks in the Men's department, mixed amongst other belts.
Only the Dickies belt is high enough quality at Walmart, you can't just pick any old belt there.
It comes in any color you want, as long as you want black, and 1 1/2 inch wide.
I'm rough on belts... I expect to replace this one every 2 years. So, for the $100 I might have paid for a "real" gun belt, I'll have a practically new belt for 20 years.
Now, temper all of this with the fact that I do not carry regularly. And more to the point, I use a shoulder holster when I do carry.
Makes my opinion a little less valuable than some others presented here. :D

i currently use a wilderness 5 stitch instructor belt, and am currently looking for a nicer leather belt for dress ocasions(instructer belt looks silly with shirt and tie :) ). Id highly recommond getting a real gun belt. The 1.5 inch walmart and other inexpensive belts may be better than a standar 1 inch belt, but will never be as good as a real reinforced gun belt. I find the belt to be the biggest key to my carry comfort, not my holster.

Blain...
As far as color goes...personal opinion rules. I always go black. Black holsters, black belts. That is because I mostly wear black shoes. I carry with suit and tie. I am of the sort that your belt should match your shoes. Call me crazy. I think brown looks good with jeans...but black goes well with everything, especially dressier clothing.
With that said, I have been carrying daily with a Levi belt from JC Penny. Black, 1 1/2 in thick. I am in the market for a new belt...dressy...so I am shopping just like you are. If I was not going to wear it with a suit...then I would get a Wilderness in a heartbeat. Black of course.

Rafter S (http://www.raftersgunleather.com/) makes a black sharkskin belt for $70.00, about as much as most of their holsters. I have one of the belts to go with two of their holsters, and am very, very pleased with both belt and holsters. They are usually at the Dallas area gunshows, and it is now to be able to actually see their belts and holsters before buying. If you like black sharkskin you won't find any better than theirs, in my humble opinion.

I'm wearing one of those Uncle Mikes laminated belts right now. It's more of a dress belt - only an inch or inch and a quarter wide. It's great for some things, but I'd not like a big gun hanging from it.
I thought a Timberland belt would be good... The dang thing started coming unlaminated in several spots. Right around the pin holes and where my clip-on belt accessories go. The inner liner is peeling right out. That makes it look rather crappy.
I wish I knew where my Dad bought my last good gun belt. I'd still be wearing it if I was still that fat. :-)
