The First Pistol you bought.

What was the first pistol you ever bought and why?
Mine was a Stainless Walther PPKS in 380. I just loved the design of the PPKS and they are so well engineered.
Then it sliced and diced the web of my hand when I shot it, so I ended up selling it about 10 years later. Although I do miss it for sentimental reasons, I don't miss the cuts on my hand.

...because it was beautiful...now it's my wife's (who's also beautiful) because she shoots it better. :)
Recently, my better half has been occupied with the next generation CZ52-shooter...I've been taking it out to keep it happy...still reliable, nice little trigger, accurate, and takes 13 round mag's too.
Best wishes,

Because if Mel Gibson could shoot one like that, so could I.
I still have that pistol and I still love it.
BTW I can shoot it pretty well too.
Nothing has ever broken and nothing has ever been changed on it.
I think I have about 10K rounds through it. Maybe 2 jams, both of which were while doing mag change drills over wet dirt with aftermarket mags.

First hand gun :Ruger Black Hawk .357 in 1974. I bought it because I liked my friends Black Hawk. Sold it to buy a Python.

My first handgun was a mistake.A friend had a Sterling .22lr and i thought id be cool and upstage him by buying a Tanfoglio GT-27 in .25acp figuring that it must be better and more powerful since it was a "25" and he had a "22".I knew literally nothing about any kind of gun at that age but quickly realized that the GT-27 was GARBAGE! It was made from the softest steel ive EVER seen in a gun and amazingly i kept it for 17 years just because it was my first gun.

It was cheap at $250 and I think it is a very good first gun. Easy to work on too.. So far I have changed the recoil and hammer springs already...

TZ-75. The CZ-75's were twice the money. This gun was perfectly reliable and pretty dang accurate as well. I traded it for my wife's wedding ring.... er... well... for the DOWN PAYMENT on the wife's wedding ring that is.

That would have been in 1974 when I was 17 years old. The gun was an arsenal rebuilt govt 1911A1, Remington Rand frame and Colt slide, that had only had 6 rounds put through it in the early 60's by the guy I bought it from, a former 'business associate' of my father. The price? $150.

I had gang-banging, drug-dealing tenants that I had to evict. Evictions are slow, and I still had to regularly visit the property at all kinds of hours for all kinds of reasons. Nothing like walking past several bangers that take exception to your evicting one of their girlfriends.

I have owned and shot handguns since the age of nine, but of course they were gifts from my father.
The first handgun I bought with my own money was a Ruger Old Army. Why ? Because I wanted to buy a new handgun and I wasn't old enough to buy a cartridge handgun (I think I was 18 years old at the time). I always liked black powder and spent several years enjoying the Old Army.
The first cartridge handgun I ever bought on my own was on my 21st birthday. It was a Raven in .25 ACP. The reason was that I was going to school and working for minimum wage. I didn't have much money and wanted to exercise my "right" to buy a handgun. Growing up, I had seen plenty of small hideout type handguns on TV, but had never actually fired one, or even held one. So, I didn't just settle for the Raven, I was actually excited about it. I have told this story before, but... Since personal use of the internet wasn't around back then, I didn't know the Raven was a POS. So, I enthusiastically shot it, and even refinished the stocks and bought an outside the belt holster for it. When I eventually sold it, I was completely content with it's quality, accuracy, and reliability of function. I was far from enthusiastic about the performance of the ammunition.
Last summer I came across the identical gun, used, at a store and purchased it for old time's sake. I haven't gotten around to actually firing it at this point and probably won't.
The first handgun I ever owned period was a Ruger Standard Model .22 autoloader that my dad purchased for me at a gun show for $50. He also owned a S&W Model 17 which I got to shoot. Contrary to what the libs would have you believe, none of them ever got up and shot someone on their own, and dispite the fact that I was nine years old at the time, I never shot anyone, never had an accident with them, and never destroyed someone elses property with them. I still own the Model 17 along with a duplicate I bought recently. I still own a Ruger Standard Model although my first one is long gone.

Well, I don't recall seeing a Raven for maybe 20 years. But then again, maybe I wasn't looking. The Ravens also came in three different finishes, blue, a brushed finish that might have been nickel, and a high gloss chrome like finish. My original one was the "nickel" and this was the same finish I found recently. I wouldn't have had any interest in it if it hadn't been the same one I owned.

Exactly as someone else posted, my first was (and still is) a Browning Hi Power MkIII. The second it hit my hand, I knew i had to have it. Also being the first time I'd seen one in person, I was impressed at how slim and small it was. I expected it to be the same size as a 1911. I just absolutely loved it. I owned a two pistols before I actually bought one. Both were gifts. A Ruger Mk2 and a Colt Commander.
The first handgun I walked in and bought with my own money was a a re-blued Colt New Service 1917 Army model. I had read about them in an old issue of Gun Digest where a SW 1917 was being converted to 45LC, funny they could have converted a Colt by swapping cylinders, but that would have been too easy. Secondly, a folk hero and famous lawman, Sid Hatfield of Matewan, WVA. carried two of them. Thirdly, Phillip Marlowe kept one in a hidden compartment of his car. Fourth, there was a famous Capra photo of a Mowhawked Paratrooper decked out with a tommy gun and a huge revolver.
I spied the old Colt in a used case at The Firing Line in Aurora, CO. I had to have it. I looked it over carefully, and asked for a bore light. The clerk behind the counter said something like "how about when you have cash money?" I returned the next morning, cash in hand and demanded a bore light from the same guy. He had a good chuckle, as did I. (Seems a number of foks had looked the old Colt over, one of the guys in the shop wanted to "Fitz" it, bought it out from under him.) Sticker price was an unheard of $275.
Passed on a VP-70 with 3 mags for $350 at the same shop later that year.
Still have the Colt, still shoot it often.

My first handgun purchase was a Glock 24P
I was going to just be punching paper.
Here's the criteria I used to pic the gun:
Consistant trigger pull
Accurate
Durable
Ergonomics
Bigger than a 9mm
Glock was cool at the time so I looked at it. Tried the 1911 but the ergonomics didn't fit me at the time. Tried various revolvers but I decided I wanted an automatic. Didn't like the ergos of any of the other autos I tried.
When I had decided on the 24 the salesman kept trying to get me to buy the Glock 23 with a Lasermax guide rod laser. It was marked something around $850, the 24P was marked $700. Couldn't see the point in the laser especially at the loss of over an inch of barrel length and for more money.
I playing with it and he was urging me to play with it.
I said "The dot goes the same place as the sights."
He said "Ya, ain't it cool?"
I said "I guess, but I can just use the sights and save myself 150 and get a better shooting gun."
I got the extended mag release and the 3.5lb connector, longer sight radius and porting for $150 less than the compact with small read dot coming out of it.
I'm glad I got it when I did. A year or two later the 17L and 24 were replaced with the 34 and 35. Good guns, but have a thing for long barrels ;) Plus the porting on the 24 is unique and much more effective than the little slots on the newer models. It does however soot up the front sight horribly.

In 1966, I wanted to buy a friend's 4" blue Python for $75 because it was so pretty, but bought a new Ruger standard automatic (blue with a 6-in tapered barrel and fixed sights) for $37 instead. (That same year, I also bought a $2500 Ford Fairlane 500 instead of that $4700 Corvette I really wanted.) I kept that first gun for thirty years, but never shot it well, and finally traded it in the late 1990's. I have since bought a Ruger 22/45 with a 4-in bull barrel and adjustable sights that I shoot much better, so I really have not missed my first gun very much and don't really regret having traded it.

My first - a 1984 S&W Model 586. Not really sure but that may be my first "defensive" flashlight as well. Knew nothing about guns back then. I think I was influenced by Harry Calahan and really liked revolvers. For appearances I prefer the original grips, but for shooting I prefer these. It has served me well for almost 20 years, though I don't shoot it much lately.

It was an utter turd in almost every respect - I traded it back to the place I bought it from for a USP .45... another so called "next logical step in evolution" to the 1911 according to my thinking at the time.
Now I keep wanting to trade it for a standard 1911. Go figure... maybe i've finally become delusional.

I bought a CZ-75B a few months after I turned 21 (way back in 2001 :) ). Why? Marine that was with me (from work) said it wasn't bad, and I liked it's feel, plus I wanted 9mm to practice with. So, I got it. In the hands of a skilled person it's a tack driver. In my hands it'll put holes pretty close together when I'm practicing well. Haven't regretted buying it a bit!
I went out that weekend to the gunshow with him intent on buying two pistols if I felt like it. After dropping cash on the pistol and 2 normal capactiy (15 rnd) mags and ammo I thought I'd better just not buy anything else.
Next day, I'm at Galyan's paying $30 too much for a Glock 21. It didn't fit -too- bad in my hands (not that I knew what it should feel like)... but I bought it. I still like it. It reminds me that I can't shoot for crap unless I practice with a piece for a while. First time I had it out I couldn't hit a paper plate at 7 yards. Seriously. With the CZ -- no problem. Not with with the Glock though. I got better.
Fun stuff... eternally glad that I made that "jump" to getting my own pistol. Two years, may rounds, and a few more firearms later... it was a good choice.

My first handgun was a Taurus 82. I knew that I wanted a revolver. I was looking at both .38spl and .357mag and while I was leaning towards a magnum I got a great deal on a used Taurus 82 so I started with a .38spl. Unfortunately I don't still have it (I wish I did). At the time I sold it I wasn't planning to have that many guns and I just bought a .357 and so I didn't see the point of having both a .38spl and a .357mag which can shoot specials :banghead: .
My first semi-auto was a Ruger P89. I don't have it either, but selling that wasn't as much of a mistake.

My first handgun purchase was a CZ-52. I got it because:
I couldn't afford a PPK, but the '52 looks a lot like one, just on steroids. It was gun #4, and I was still pretty ignorant about calibers, but I had no intention of carrying it, so stopping power was a moot point.
Back in '95, CZ-52's were a relatively new thing, and nobody knew anything about 'em. I had a heck of a time finding ANY references to 'em anywhere, but one of the first was a Standard Book of Firearm Values from 1985 that listed my $140 CZ as being worth some $1500! THAT got my attention!
I knew it was a military surplus gun, and I had been reading about military trials. I figured anything that passed extensive reliability tests, and that people had been willing to cough up over a grand to buy was probably a darn good gun regardless of what it was selling for now.
It was different, and it fired an odd caliber that equated to a .30 Magnum. I am a die-hard non-conformist, and I enjoy things that are different from what is commonly accepted BECAUSE they are different.
It was cheap. Really cheap. $140 cheap, for a military-accepted design built by the Brno firearms facility, which was well-known for producing EXCELLENT rifles. I figured there's no way that such a gun could be reproduced for that sort of price, which made it a steal and a best-buy. I still think that.
It could be safely said that the CZ-52 got me thinking about Hand Rifles, and shooting it got me intrigued at the concept of the Automag III, which was the first official Hand Rifle in the collection, which got me to Here and Now.
I've enjoyed the CZ-52 from day 1, It's always been fun to shoot, and it has eaten a lot of ammo. The only handgun I've shot more is my Colt .22 Auto, which I bought specifically to run LOTS of ammo through in order to learn how to shoot a handgun without bankrupting myself on ammo costs.
Now good 7.62 x 25 is tricky to come by for cheap, (Compared to the yellow-box Norinco 7.62 Tokarev stuff I bought so much of at $6/box of 60.)so I don't shoot it much anymore.
And after 8 years, and I-can't-count-the-number of rounds through it, I just broke my stock firing pin. Rats. :(

My first handgun was a CZ-50 in .32 ACP. My Dad bought it for me for $50 from a Rod & Gun Club on an Army base when we were in Germany. The firing pin has since broken, and I don't think it's worth the money to get it fixed, since that's likely to cost more than the gun.
The first handgun I ever purchased with my own money was a Colt King Cobra .357 Mag. 6" barrel in stainless. Still the best looking and most intimidating thing in my collection.

In December of 1972, I bought myself a Christmas present. S&W Model 39-2. 9mm. I sold it a couple of years later. It never fit my hand well. I also got a good deal on a Browning HP, used, with factory target sights and two magazines. $125. (Sound cheap, but I was only making about $325 a month as a Private E-2 in the US Army.)

CZ-75.
Why? Because at the time (1988)they were cheap, accurate, and couldn't be bought in the US. I was stationed in W. Germany at the time. Next was a CZ-50. Both since stolen, both very missed.

I actually did a little research first to make sure it wasn't a POS - just because somebody in a movie has one doesn't mean it works. Colt Government Series 70. Bought it 20+ years ago and it is currently on my belt in an excellent Milt Sparks Watch-Six holster.
I bought it because I had enlisted as an army MP and wanted to practice before going in. I put many rounds through it before shipping out and was confident of shooting expert, if not perfect. Then we went to the pistol range for the first familiarization firing.
I quickly learned that my personal weapon with the nice trigger job bore little resemblance to a beat-up G.I. .45 with a heavy trigger. Oh man. I was lucky to make sharpshooter, but subsequently qualified expert each year.
What a difference a trigger makes.

Taurus .38 snubby.
Why? The year was 1989. I'd recently sold my .35 lever-action deer rifle to help me get through the last couple of years of grad school because, if you haven't checked lately, they don't pay SQUAT for TA's & RA's (teaching assistants & research assistants). {What was I thinking? Wait, don't answer that...}
I was down to a baseball bat for home defense.
I was living in the "student ghetto" in a large SW US city.
One night, shortly after getting into bed, just as I was drifting into dreamland, getting past the stress :what: of grad school, momentarily forgeting that dissertation defense was coming up, and soon I'd have to stand before the best & brightest profs in the region to defend my intellectual integrity & justify being given that grad degree.
Suddenly, out in my courtyard, I heard a loud noise that sounded something like a demolition crew working late. (After the fact, I realized that what i had heard was the sound of the perp trying to rip my gate off its hinges.)
After several tries, he finally understood that not even the {angel dust? crack? meth?} would help him rip the gate off, so he just vaulted over it.
By then, of course, I'm fully awake, asking myself, ***?
Next moment, I'm seeing this guy with crazed eyes standing right up against the outside of the picture window of my garage apartment, looking in with reckless abandon, banging on it as if to say, "let me in NOW or I'll break this %$#^*& out!"
My dog is in the window, 6" from his thigh, barking her ass off, but he's totally ignoring her.
In far less than BDU's, I grabbed said baseball bat, which at the moment didn't offer much comfort, and dialed 911. ("Stay on the line with me", said the operator, "regardless of what happens."
Right.
The cops arrived quickly. It was a summer Friday night in the university ghetto, so they were out in force.
As they came up, the frenzied dude jumped the fence & disappeared, never to be caught.
Next day, I bought the Taurus with the money I'd been saving to pay next months rent. If you don't live to the next month, I reasoned, why pay rent?
_______
Years later, I replaced it with a Smith & Wesson 3914.
Last week, I replaced that with a Kahr K9.

My first revolver was a Hi-Standard Sentinel .22. It was around 1965 and I must have been 16 or 17 years old. I bought it just for plinking and jack rabbits. Mom and Dad owned a small country store where they sold a few guns and ammunition, so I got the gun wholesale.
The first semi-auto I bought was a .22 Ruger Government Model, but that was years later - it must have been in the late 70s or early 80s. I bought it just because I wanted it. I've had a couple of them since then. I used to use one in .22 IHMSA matches.

Somebody dug into the archives for this one. But since it's here I'll post along. My first was a S&W 39 with the alloy frame. Ended up selling it to a Trooper when I proved to him that the pistol would not jam. Fired mag after mag of anything 9mm, then started putting a fired case randomly in the mags. It chambered the spent round every time, until he ran out of ammo. He said name a price, I did and he paid it. Didn't see that coming. Wish I had it back.

Ruger KP89, stainless, manual safety, bought NIB. Why? Because:
1) 9mm is the biggest yet that I can shoot well as a beginner
2) it is a reliable tank
3) nice light SA trigger
4) fits and balances well in my hand
5) tolerable recoil due to big size and metal frame
6) it is a Ruger! :)
7) it is aesthetically pleasing to my eye - it has this brawnish brutality about itself
8) it is a full-size military model
9) Ruger has a legendary customer service reputation (goes with the gun, not the owner!)
10) it possesses all of the above and still costs $ 349 even here in PRC

When I turned 21, I had a pretty good job, cheap rent and no expenses except for TV dinners and beer so I got a new (this was the early 80's) stainless S&W 686 with 6" barrel. I was heavily influenced by my best friend who planned to do a lot of handgun hunting for pigs and coyotes, but it only took a couple of outings for me to realize that I needed a lot more field time before I'd be ready to hunt with a handgun. The 686 was a thing of beauty and had a nice trigger, but being young, I got bored with it and sold it to a coworker who planned to use it as a home defense gun. I didn't feel right not owning a handgun, but couldn't think of anything I really wanted, so I picked up a new blue S&W Model 10 snubbie in .38 spl just so that I'd have something.
I was an idiot to sell the 686, but I still have the Model 10 - it's a blast (literally) to shoot at the range and new shooters like it because it's simple, smooth, and looks and feels "right".

Star Super chamber in 9mm Largo.
I didn't know anything about guns at the time and a cop friend sold it to me for dirt cheap. This was back when they could buy guns that they got from the crooks for really cheap.
Then one day I learned that Largo is not the standard 9mm and that it is no longer made. (I know you can still buy surplus but didn't want to deal with it for this particular gun). I kept it for a few years and then traded it off for something I'd use more often.

box stock Colt govt mdl in .45acp of course, and NIB. that was in the mid fifties. i still have it and it has never failed me. all that gorgeous blue is long gone as it has been carried many miles and fired untold K of military brown box ball. many other guns have graced my gun cases since then, but i think this is about our 50th anniversary year and there is a never ending love between us. so, what is this?, true confession time. ha

My first gun was a Browning High Power (BHP) Mark II 9mm. I purchased it because it fit my small hands/fingers perfectly. The only other semi-auto that fits it so well are the Kahr series semi-autos.
My BHP has been to Cylinder and Slide for modest custom work and to Trijicon for a set of night sights. The gun has gone through thousands of rounds and two trips for training at Massad Ayoob's Lethal Force Institute. It was also my first carry gun.
I still own that BHP and I don't intend to give her up.

I remember it well. I was 14 years old and my dad had to fill out the paperwork. It was a Arminius HW7 .22LR with spare cylinder in .22 Magnum. 6 inch vent rib barrel. I paid $80 out the door. Naturally I broke the trigger return spring in 7 months time and wore that blueing off in a year..Yeah I know junky gun but I was just learning...The next gun I bought was a Nickel plated S&W Model 27 with a six inch barrel .357 magnum. That was a few months later and I bought it at a flea market. I recollect that was around $190. Now that was a beauty and it shot great. Tim

When they first came out; a Glock 17, but didn't keep it long. Back then they came in a plastic "Tupperware" box. Inside the box was a tapered post designed to squeeze the trigger; I had my 17 loaded one time (luckily I remembered the box' feature at the last moment) and came within about a millimeter of shooting myself right in the chest... Scared the c_ap out of me!! Anyway, for some reason, I just don't like plastic guns. Just my .02 cents...

My first pistol was a Glock 30. I wanted a .45 for concealed carry, and I got a good deal on it. I ended up selling it and buying a Springfield 1911 - much thinner gun & much better trigger.

The first gun I bought was a Star BM, in nice condition. I still have it, and except for the weight (yow!), it's as nice as any small 9mm pistol and a very accurate shooter. These days, I am more likely to carry the alloy-framed cousins, either a BKM (same thing but lighter) or a .45 PD. (Yeah, I'm a real tough cookie!)
They are not high-tech guns and the lockwork is quite simple, but I like them. They don't require a rocket scientist to keep 'em clean and working.

I bought my first pistol as soon as I could (just turning 21 years old).
I had wanted a S&W Combat Magnum since I was a teenager, so on my 21st birthday, I marched into my local Montgomery Wards store and over to their sporting goods counter. (Anyone starting to guess how old I am? :o )
I plunked my money down on a brand new Model 19 w/6" barrel and walked away (no Instacheck then  ) with a smile on my face.
I ended up adding to the "collection" soon, so while I probably put 8 or 10 boxes of ammo through it, I tended to want to baby it so I mostly shot the other pistols I bought after that.
That was in 1971, and it's still sitting in it's original box, in new condition, in my safe, just waiting for me to pick it up and wipe on a new coat of oil once in a while.
They say you never forget your first, so there you are.
As far as my other "first", her name was Sharon or Cheryl or something like that... whatever.

Still have my first handgun, bought this one to celebrate being old enough to acquire a handgun, 21st birthday gift to myself. Debated whether I should spend $400 for a Nazi marked Luger or this .22 caliber Stoeger knockoff...(sigh)...one of the mistakes of my youth, should have gotten the 9mm, would have been worth five times the original selling price.

First Pistol I ever bought - Ruger P90 in 1994. Still have it, still shoot it regularly, and I love it.
First Pistol I ever owned - My dad gave me a blued bull-barrel MkII several years ago. I ended up selling that one to my buddy here just about 2 years ago and bought another MkII with a bull-barrel only in stainless from my dad to replace it.
First Pistol I ever shot - Ruger Bearcat. Man, I loved that little gun. I first shot it when I was about 6 or 7 (I am 33 now), and while not a sentimental man about most things, I wish my dad had never sold that particular gun.
Jeez... looking at this list, is it any surprise that I love Ruger so?
For some reason this computer at school won't perform the "copy/paste" function, but above a guy mentioned his "other" firsts and he said "Sharon or Cheryl or something like that"... That made me laugh. I bought my P90 before I got married, I owned while I was married, and I have it now instead of a wife... lol

I shot .45acp on a competition pistol team in the service so when I got out I started looking for a good 1911 style semi-auto. While browsing through a gunstore I ran across a Smith & Wesson Model 25 in .45acp......moon clips and all. I have always had a sweet spot for the large frame Smiths so I did some negotating with the owner and bought it. I must have burned 10,000 rounds of .45acp and .45 auto rim ammo through it before selling it to a good friend of mine. He still has and shoots it today.
My first handgun will always be remembered fondly!!!

My first pistol was a Ruger P89 that I picked up fro 359 from Academy. Many people seem to really dislike this gun, but it's built like a tank, won't jam on anything, and accuracy isn't all that bad once you take the time to get used to the trigger.
Being that it was my first handgun, I had no choice but to get used to the long trigger pull so I guess that helped somewhat...

First Pistol I got was a Taurus 945 from my dad when I talked to him about wanting to get a 9mm pistol. Dad told me that in his collection of several handguns and there was a 9mm in it he had never even shot! And I could have it! :D
So I went to check out dad's collection and found that he didn't have a 9mm. It was a 45. :scrutiny: Not that I turned him down on the offer but it was a little more gun than I wanted to start with.
Not long afterwards I found an old AMT mark I .22 that I made the mistake of buying for a practice piece. After a while of trying to learn how to shoot with that POS I traded up to a Buckmark. Much better.
Collection is still growing, but I still like my Taurus.

The day after after I turned 21 (which made it 29 ago years this past Monday) I bought a brand new COlt MkIV Series 70 Government model for just a little under $200 at Allied Sporting Goods... IN THE MALL!

My first pistol.
It depends on what I consider as "mine".
The very first was a Ruger Blackhawk, .357mag that I bought for my ex-wife. I had to leave it with her when the divorce hit!! The first pistol that I consider was all mine was a Baikal IJ70-17A (.380 Makarov). Heck!! I don't even remember exactly when I got it!! I do remember that I paid somewhere in the neighborhood of a "C" note for it.
