A bit of - ''who's at the door'' security

We discussed not too long ago on a thread, aspects of carry regarding in the home, and types of front door were brought up too. We have also discussed and pretty much agreed that a home break-in would (could) likely be quick - and no-one can react as well to surprise. OTOH ... I doubt any of us wishes to have to feel any paranoia .... a modest ''yellow'' is perhaps ''comfortable''.

Started a train of thought ....... mainly for me with my office set-up. Which is about 25 yds from house down the yard. And visual is nil to the outside when I am within.

My office is in a large 32 x 14 custom ''shed'' .... albeit now fitted out with insulation, heating, extra wall coverings ... in fact it's like a small home!! The ''rear'' half is office (including safe, reload bench .. and a lot of C&R plus that won't fit in the safe!!) .... and the ''front'' half is utility pretty much ..... entrance is by one of two doors .... a std ''front door'' ... in the utility area side! And at the end, double doors .. one of which is the main ''in use'' one.

My main problem has been, knowing an I/D on any ''visitor'', being blind to that door and even not hearing too much either from other end. Of course it is usually my wife, one of the step kids ... occasionally a buddy. So I am hardly sittin with my back to office door, hand on piece, as I work on the puter!!

There is BTW a PIR motion detector light that comes on from an adjacent shed, once dark.

However ... struck me I should like to know ..... or at least have some warning of any ''visitors'' ... I work quite late too at times.

Found at Circuit City today what is I think an ideal ''fix'' 2.4GHz wireless linked vid camera (with motion detector) ..... and a small monitor to go with it. Got it hooked up and seems useful. If motion detected the monitor beeps ... almost the most useful feature .. second to which, a quick glance at screen and I should see who it is.

Box has a ''GE'' label ... but - yeah - you guessed .. made in F'ing China! (sigh, groan). Oh well ... seems to do the trick.

Other security addition made was some relatively inexpensive door alarm items ... just the simple magnetic type ... battery operated and once triggered shriek with a 120dB plus sound. Something I can leave triggered for over night.

Keep thinking - is this actually paranoia?? I don't think so ... more a way to be a tad more secure and better prepared .. better in fact for being more relaxed!! I value my guns too!!!!!

Sorry to ramble - as I usually do ... it's not treatable at my age!:D

you can get a "pressure-pad" to put under a door mat that would beep or buzz.lights are good idea but try one that uses infrared as well as motion activated.i dont think youre being paranoid,it just makes sense to want to secure your valuables best you can.the camera is a great idea.keep thinking.

It sounds to me like your new security additions should work well. When first reading your post though I was thinking a bit more low tech. How hard would it be to put a peephole in your door after the fact, or would you need to outright replace the door for that?

I live in the country and have a long driveway, so I have a driveway alarm. I've thought of getting one of those wireless cameras and sending to the TV, but I could probably just as easily get off my butt and go look out the front window. Or you could get a dog.

Chaim ............

I considered low-tech several times but it was inadequate for what i wanted. How hard would it be to put a peephole in your door after the fact, or would you need to outright replace the door for that?I have sketched a dwg to show the problem (not really to scale) ...... a peephole in outer (in/out) door would achieve nothing ... except let in a draft! That door, when office door closed is non-visual ... the major prob.

A peephole in office door also would achieve little .. as I sit at opposite end of the room ... with back to office door! Not good if the ''wrong'' person appeared!!

The ''side- front door'' right now is locked so no probs .... use that most in summer. I'll add a second camera when I get one .. to cover that door.

The black blob is camera (PIR light is on other old shed nearby)... and now shows me a pic of door area outside ... plus some of path and bit of driveway .. where truck is usually parked in fact. The beauty of the triple bleep I get when camera gets motion is that I am alerted to eyeball the monitor - just behind where I sit.

Gotta be better than it was ... and anyone thinkin of tryin to sneak in now the info is spilled ... forget it .. there are ''other'' hazards which i will not describe! :D ...... that's my story and I'm stickin to it!! My guns only leave here with me in a wooden box! :p
