I have recently acquired a Mauser 98. The Mauser is Lacking Markings. So i Was hoping someone could shed some light on what I have here. I Was told it was a BRNO but it doesnt seem that way to me.

1. The Receiver is Blank and shows no signs of scrubbing.
2. Serial Numbers match. And they are W538 (thats right 3 digit serial). This is on Bolt, Receiver, Mag, Trigger housing and Stock. However the Barrel is one off and the Serial on the Barrel is W537. The
3. The only other Markings i can find on the Gun. Is a C on the Barrel Deadsmack in the Center. and about 4 of these markings that look like this [M} This Marking appears on the Receiver, Barrel and on the Front Sight.
4. There is a Waffen Mark on the Rear Sight and Sight Base.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Can I be the first to say "Pictures?"

There are so many variations of Mausers, so many that went through rebuild programs, without visual means to identify, who knows.

Most likely a yugo scrubbed (or non marked) receiver, they made a few for export. If you show pics and show the marks (and overall build) somebody will come along and tell you all about it.

I have a Herters XK3 that I'm convinced is built on an unmarked Zastava commercial 98. There are no markings on the receiver except for a very poorly stamped # that is essentially illegible on the bottom flat. All markings are on the barrel. The rifle was sold prior to 1968 so no S/N was required. The rifles that Herters marketed were assembled in the U.S. so no import marks were required at that time. Basically, what I have matches what the OP describes, if his is not a military piece.

Hey guys I am going to post pics. Sorry Its going to look crappy but all i got is my camera phone. The item has no import markings as said. And that why I am just wondering. I didnt think these Yugos were sold to America before the 70's . There is also a marking on the top bolt i hope someone can Identify.

I just found it very interesting it has Two sets of serial numbers that all match the gun..

On the rear bolt there is also a (gMM) mark lowercase g with two capital MM so it almost looks like 9mm. There is also a (V) (/) [M] on the barrel in different places.
