ms6852 August 18, 2010, 01:48 AM I've been reading about the 9 x 23 winchester cartridge which seems to have the same ballistics as that of a 357 magnum minus the recoil. Does anyone here know who manufactures a semi-auto handgun that chambers this cartridge? This cartridge seems to be a sleeper and the beauty of it is the brass is almost indestructible.

Sapper771 August 18, 2010, 05:44 AM Don't know much about them, but most of the pistols chambered for 9x23 that I have seen come from custom shops. 9x23 was/is popular with competition shooters that use compensators on their pistols. If your interested in 9x23, you better prepare to reload it.
I have a friend who has a Colt Gov't Model chambered for 9x23 from the factory. I don't know how he got it, but it is a beautiful gun. You may be able to call around and see if some 1911 manufacturers offer it as an option.
WC145 August 18, 2010, 06:08 AM Colt and Springfield made 1911's in 9x23 and the Witness may be available in it, I'm not sure. A lot of .38 Supers will chamber and fire 9x23 without any problem, the case dimensions are very close, some extractor adjustment may be needed since the 9x23 is rimless and the Super is semi-rimmed. I had a RIA GI .38 Super that ran great with 9x23, though if I had plans to shoot it a lot I would have used a heavier recoil spring.
Even if your Super won't run with it stock, you can easily have it rechambered and set up to work with 9x23.
ms6852 August 18, 2010, 04:20 PM Thanks guys, looks like I'm gonna have to call a few gunsmiths around the area. I really like the characteristics of this cartridge. It will be interesting to see what I can come up with.
9mmepiphany August 18, 2010, 04:26 PM I'll just mention, in case you weren't aware, that the 9x23mm is the .38 Super in rimless form...a lot like Cooper's proposed 9mm Super in Cooper on Handguns...for cleaner feeding

No, I was not aware of this. I just started reading about this cartridge which really fueled my interest. Thanks to you now I have to read Cooper on Handguns.
THANKS.
oneounceload August 18, 2010, 04:55 PM Since folks in Europe are generally prohibited from owning guns chambered in current military cartridges (9X19), both the 9X21 and 9X23 are popular there.
9mmepiphany August 18, 2010, 04:59 PM Thanks to you now I have to read Cooper on Handguns.
Don't look too hard...it's just a short paragraph
He proposed cutting a 5.56x45mm case down to length and loading it up for .357 Mag velocities
ms6852 August 18, 2010, 05:05 PM Glad to hear Cooper on Handguns is just a paragraph, I can read a paragraph faster than a book.
MachIVshooter August 18, 2010, 06:12 PM The 9x23 will approximate moderate .357 magnum loads. If you truly want to duplicate .357 performance in an autoloader, you should look at the 9x25 Dillon (http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalog/index.php?cPath=21_24). It's a true screamer, able to launch 95 gr. bullets at 2,000 FPS.

I chrono'd WW 124gr JSP 9x23 out of my RIA at 1448fps avg, I believe that puts it squarely in 125gr .357mag territory.
gofastman August 19, 2010, 12:47 AM Can someone clue me in as to why the OP wouldn't just get a .357 SIG?

Wouldn't it just be easier to buy a .357 Sig? Both have similar ballistics don't they?

And you believe correctly.........for a moderate load. Heavy .357 magnum loads eclipse 1,700 FPS with a 125 gr. pill for more than 800 ft/lbs.
The 9x23 is a formidable round, but does not have the potential of the .357 Magnum, 9x25 Dillon or the Dillon's parent case, the 10mm Auto. Those three are all capable of making energies in excess of 800 ft/lbs from normal handguns. The 9x23 and .357 Sig are not.
9mmepiphany August 19, 2010, 01:34 AM Can someone clue me in as to why the OP wouldn't just get a .357 SIG?
As the 357 SIG is based on the .40 case, you could get more rounds into the same length mag body with the 9x23mm
