They all laughed

I need to hire a medial technician to assist me with endoscopic procedures. Mrs. Khornet has a friend whose son is an Army Medic, just discharged, and looking for work. I remember meeting her at a party and asker her about him last year; she seemed to view it a s some sort of eccentricity on the kid's part to be in the service.

Anyway Mrs. K called her and got the guy's number. I was about to call, and then realized I didn't know the guy's rank. Yes, I know, he's a civilian now....it's just a sentimental courtesy from one military medical guy to another. So I called his mom, and she not only didn't have a clue what his rank had been, no one esle in the room did either. She asked around among the brothers in the background, and they all began to laugh. She finally said, chuckling, "I don't know, Just call him Jack!" and rang off.

What's wrong with this picture? If my son were in the service I would note with pride his rank/rate/unit/MOS/duty station etc. These people seemed to think the Army is for losers from the underclass, not fine young men like their son. And there are many like them. That was last night, and I'm still steamed over it.

KHornet,
I think more and more of the U.S. population is losing touch completely with the military and what it entails. Good on you for trying to extend some basic military courtesy to the gent. I hope you'll persist in trying to contact him: lots and lots of Vets are under-employed or actually unemployed.:(
