My local dealer has the mentioned rifle on the rack for $340. Gun is used but appears new. It's a pre-FN made in New Haven. Is this a good rifle and good deal? I don't know much about Winchesters.

Better jump on that deal,if the gun is in good shape.I'd pay that just for the action/bolt.

Is it the Pre-64 style Mauser extractor?

No clue but doubt it. It's in a factory synthetic stock.

if it is a push feed - easy to mistake these for a rem 700 - it is priced a little high, but fair. if it is a crf, which i think it is, it is a good price.

I'd bet money it's a push feed at that price.

Are the push feeds still good? I could probably talk it down a little.

Not to be a smartass, but these actions have worked for Remington over 50 years and the Model 700 is one of the most popular actions around, and it is strictly a push feed. My camp rifle when I go to Canada or Alaska fishing is a post 64 Model 70 in 338 WM, a push feed action that I have complete confidence in for nasty 4 legged emergencies. With either action, if you like it, and get it a good price, buy it! BTW, if it would help, post 64 Model 70's have s/n's starting with G, as G123456.

Nope. The "G" prefix started in 1968 with the passing of the GCA of that year.

The Winchester pushfeed action is a good one. I have several target rifles built on that action.

as mentioned, there's nothing wrong w/ push feed rifles. just know and understand what you are getting.

Oh I know there is nothing wrong with push feed, I have a Remington. Just want to make sure the rifles were good to go and that the feed was the only thing that changed.

I owned one overnight once a few years ago. I got it out of the box and the safety was frozen and wouldn't work. I took it back the next day and got a Savage. My gunsmith told me that some of the last Winchesters that were manufactured just before the company downsized were not very good - quality wise.

This one also had a frozen safety and was not in good condition as I originally thought. I passed.
