I've decided it's time for my first Beretta 92FS so I went to my LGS and was surprised to find 4 different models staring back at me from the case. After checking out Beretta's website, I was greeting by 3 additional models... So now I am looking at a total of 7 possibilitites. So my question is, which model is the quintessential Beretta 92? The Italian made 92 FS? The 92A1? M9 Commercial...or maybe the 92A1? I'm leaning toward the 92 FS made in Italy but I'm looking for some input and I know opinions will vary but all opinions are welcome and appreciated!

My vote goes for the 92A1. I think it looks sharp, plus I like the captive recoil spring and internal recoil buffer.

Now, if Beretta offered a 92 with a frame mounted safety and cocked and locked option I'd be all over it!

Given that the Elite II is no longer available, i'm thinking the 92FS would be my choice too.

I actually like the 90-Two, but then i like everything from the pen of Giorgetto Giugiaro...he did the Lotus Esprit and the Nikon F5

I agree. The style, aesthetics and function of a 92FS INOX is superb. I was about to "pull the trigger" and grab one. But i found a pistol that I just had to have more (Raptor).

The other style of beretta 92 that I really want is the polymer since it has the rail. This is more practical and functional for EDC due to weight and capability for accessories.

Don't quote me on this because I may be wrong, but I think there's a metal framed version of the 92 with a rail. I believe it's called the M9A1.

I have an Italian 92fs inox. It jammed once on the second or so mag ever put through it and never since in several hundred rounds. Also, I have never cleaned it since getting it brand new. That says a lot about Beretta quality.

They do. They are out of production and quite pricey. They are Combat Model and Steel I, and I think the Billenium model also has a frame mounted safety - most of these go for well over $1000 They can be carried cocked and locked. There is also a gunsmith on the Beretta Forum who can do a safety conversion to a frame mounted safety that can be cacked and locked. I'll have to see if I can find a link.

I have a Model 87, .22LR that is like the 92 but has a frame mounted safety can be carried cocked and locked. There are some .380 models that also can be. I have 4 variants of the 92, they are great. I think my favorite is the Type M, a single stack 9mm variant, it's an Inox.

I've been shopping for Beretta's also.
The 90two has a rail under that (ugly) cover.
The A1 and the M9A1 have rails and the FS does not.
The M9 commercial is made to look military and has the dot and post sights instead of the more common two dot rear and single dot front.
I'd like the Inox better if the stainless was polished.

Have you ever seen the 92 M? It's a compact single stack with the magazine holding 8 rounds.

There have been more models and variations of the 92 series Beretta than many people realize. If you're looking for what you call the "quintessential" Beretta, I think it would have to be a blued (not Bruniton) Italian-made 92FS from the mid 80's with all metal parts and the straight dust cover (basically the model you saw in all the good 80's action movies - Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, etc).

I have an Italian 92FS made a couple years ago, with a few polymer or polymer-coated parts and the slanted dust cover that is tattooed with warnings all over it. I have installed the "D" spring and a steel guide rod. It's a fantastic gun.

My next Beretta will most likely be the upcoming model 96A1 (.40S&W) with rail, captive recoil spring, recoil buffer, etc.

The sweetest looking Beretta 92 is, in my opinion, the 96G Elite Brigadier. My buddy has one that he won't part with. Stainless Elite II slide, black frame, shortened stainless barrel, finger-groove grip with stainless hex screws, black skeletonized hammer, black safety, checkered backstrap, and extended rubber base pad magazine. Sweet...

I've been looking at a stainless Vertec model 92fs in 9mm for sale locally. The gun looks almost new and comes with Crimson Trace laser grips. The asking price is $550... is that a good deal? I've looked for Vertec info but there isn't much coming up.

Not mine because I wouldn't sell it if it was. But here is a frame mounted safety 92.

The type M is just a litttle thinner than the full size. Enough so you can feel it but not enough to make it easoer to conceal. It's also shorter. in the frame. The slide is same thickness as a full size just length of a Centurion model.

If I had the cash to spare I would jump on one of those centurions. I have an older 92FS, but always wanted a Centurion. And for that price, a good shooter is a bargain, even if it's got a few nicks on it.

This is the first ive heard of this. Berettaforum.net has discussion on a few new guns Beretta is releasing in the future. The PX4 compact and the 92A1/96A1. Neither of these have frame mounted safeties.

The Beretta 92FS Steel I - One of my all time favorite guns ... EVER. These are VERY difficult to find since they are no longer made. They were made in SAO and DA/SA, and both in 9mm and 40SW. Over 5 years, I've been able to find 3 of these babies. Trigger action almost as good as a higher end 1911.
