Kel-Tec Sub 2000 Having issues

August 21, 2010, 12:46 PM
Just bought a Kel-Tec Sub 2000 and when I unfold it, I can't get the barrel/foreend to lock positively in place, and the trigger guard never returns to its normal position. Any ideas?

It must be quality control issuse at Kel-Tec. Some of their stuff works like clockwork and i would count on it as a carry weapon. Others, sometimes of the same model, isnt fit for a paperweight. That also leads to many debates, two people, both being, honest, get into a gunfight because one says, hey the bang bang model works, and the other, knows, they won't even go bang bang. They do seem to have a decent attitude towards repairs, if it's new, send it back and wait. There again, sometimes it comes right back fixed, other times it takes weeks.
good luck

Sounds tight. An adjustment on the screws might fix it. If it doesn't, call Kel-Tec. Friendly folks. My mag catch wore out on my 9MM Sub 2000. I called them and they said send the gun in, or if I wanted, they would ship me the new part. They make them from steel now instead of polymer. Works like a champ.

Try adjusting the forend by unscrewing it and moving it around and tighten it down. I have noticed this can happen when I reassemble mine sometimes but a quick adjustment gets it right back up.

all good advice, the post that did it for my was from the KTOG forum:

You'll need to remove the forearm noting it's position on the barrel. There is a large round nut at the base of the barrel. Loosen that about one turn, this will be easier with the Sub partially folded. Open and lock the Sub in it's shooting position than hand tighten the nut until it is as tight as you can get it by hand. Now open and close the Sub several times to verify it locks open snugly, but can be unlocked from the open position. Adjust the barrel nut slightly as needed. The trigger guard should just seat up at the very last bit. When you are satisfied that the trigger guard snaps into place with no slack in the barrel replace the forearm taking care that you tighten the screws as snugly as possible. You don't need to grog torque them but they should be obviously tight. The round opening at the back of the forearm cinches over that nut and holds it in place.

KTOG has a lot of good info. By my understanding, Kel Tec will fix just about anything, send you the parts, or send you the parts and talk you through installing them if you have trouble.

So, how's it shoot?

Haven't got a chance to shoot it yet. Was raining yesterday and I usually go over to my father-in-law's field to do my shooting. I might get it out today. This new glock mag is a real pain to load, I'm no wuss but honestly I could only get the first 4 9mm rounds in the mag. Left it overnight, see if it loosens up. Ordered the glock mag loading tool and a few extra mags.

Mine got easier, but it is still harder than anything else I own

The XD loading tool I never need to use doesn't fit, either.

i noticed that the primer strikes were getting off centered with mine. turns out that it was the forend grip had a crack that was allowing the barrel to shift. i haven't sent the gun back to keltec yet. i was wondering if they would just send me the new forend grip.

Mine didn't fold properly at first either, you have to work it several times. That was the least of my problems with this gun. It jammed CONSTANTLY. Out of a 50 round box it jammed 7 times. I was using a factory glock mag and winchester ammo.
