M&P 9 15 round magazine?

OK, I'm confused...

Just bought a new M&P 9 today and headed to the range. I loaded up the first mag, 17 rounds, no problem. Loaded up the second, I only got 15 rounds in it. Looked at the indicator holes on the side, and it only goes to 15. According to the S&W site the gun has a 17+1 capacity. From what I can find on teh interwebz, S&W doesn't even make a 15 round 9mm M&P mag. My Google Fu is weak, though. The 15 round mag looks identical to the 17 except it's missing 2 holes, and the follower doesn't depress as far, only allowing 15 to load. I'm wondering if the spring just has more coils, and I could cut the excess off? I haven't disassembled them yet, but I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this.

I love the gun, btw. :D

Sounds screwey to me...mine are all to 17 (I can actually load 18 rounds). I say take them apart and see if you notice a difference.

Perhaps a .40-caliber magazine - which holds 15 rounds - was slipped into the packaging by mistake. This would explain the counter hole discrepancy. Compare its feed lip spacing with your 17-rounder and see if it is different as well (the .40's will almost certainly be wider.) Is there a caliber marking? I would not continue to use it, but contact your dealer or S&W and have them exchanged.

REAPER is correct.
When they sent me my (2) free mags a couple of years ago for my M&P9 I got one of the 15 rd mags.....called 'em up and they told me they have to produce those just for NJ.
Within a few days I had a 17 rd mag in my mailbox.....now the 15 rd mag see most of the range time.
5 mags with a new gun....not bad.

Well, looks like the only difference (other than the extra indicator holes) is the 15 rd has extra coils at the bottom of the spring. These could easily be cut off to match the 17 round mag.
