Scope my Rifle

I just purchased a Remington 700 SPS Synthetic tactical rifle in .308 with the heavy 20" barrel. I do not yet have a scope for it and am reaching out for some guidance.

First off, I bought the gun because it seems to be a very accurate rifle out to about 500 yds for the price (which comes out to about $600 with shipping and FFL) then the 20" barrel comes into play and farther ranges are probably out of the question. So please avoid telling me I'm an idiot for getting such a short barrel - like many of my friends are so fully committed to doing.

I would like a scope that is also in the neighborhood of about $600. This gun is primarily for outdoor shooting at ranges. Sometimes at paper targets, other times at tires, car doors, and what not.

Overall, I would like to become the most proficient marksman I could be out to about 500 yds. I have a standard M1A that I can comfortably shoot at (and hit) fire extinguishers out to 500 yds as well with iron sights, so this is my entry into the world of scoped rifles.

I am partial to lower power rather than going for some 40x scope that can tell me when a squirrel is winking at me. I have looked at Leupold MK-4 scopes, but now they seem to be a bit more than I really need.

I welcome your thoughts...

you're probably going to change your friend's mind with the barrel. lots of people are moving to shorter ones.

I put a bushnell 6500 elite tactical on my 700. 2.5-16x variable power with exposed knobs has worked out great for me. right in your price range too at most places.

good luck, and enjoy the new rifle

How about a Nikkon Monarch 4-16 x 42mm with BDC or Mildot reticle.

If you are shooting out to 500 will want at least 10X magnification. Since you will likely be shooting in broad day light, you don't need a huge objective lens.

They are $350-$450

this is what I have on my Remington 700 sps varmit.

* 3-9x40, 30mm tube
* Front focal plane (so your mildot reticule is useful at all powers),
* true .1mrad turrets (again for the mildot reticule).
* Optics are decent, maybe not zeiss quality .. but neither is the price.
* durability and predictabity of adjustments have been outstanding.
* Its not super light or anything, but it has a useful combination of features.

You should always buy the best glass you can afford with your intened uses in mind. Based on what you are looking to do, I would look at a Leupold
VX3. It doesn't sound like you are looking for something with ranging abilities so a mil-dot won't be mandatory nor is a FFP scope. Besides, those are probably far outside of your budget. The Leupold VX3 in 4.5-14 x 40 would fit the bill and can be had for approx. $600.

Konus M30. I have the 8.5x32 version and it is great. Holds a zero well, 1/8 MOA, Blue and Green illuminated Mil-Dot reticle, SFP, surprisingly clear optics for a scope that is $350 from I like it a lot. A Swarovski snob from work even complimented it and that is a lot coming from him
