Seems pretty fair. You won't see much variation from dealer to dealer on new guns, they are operating on a profit margin in the neighborhood of 16-24% for most guns.

HGUNHNTR :
i got a price from my local gandermtn on tuesday and they told me it would be $350 plus tax. so was a little surprised in the $85 price difference.
i own a business and know all about the profit markup.
one more thing, i have found, in my area the used guns seem to sell for only slightly less than the new ones so i tend to go new. one exception was my ruger single six ( 1972 old model) i stole that for 250 while the "new models" used are going for $450 - $570. god i hate ny sometimes.

In my neck of the woods Gander Mtn is almost always the highest place in town, and usually by a considerable margin.

I haven't looked at that exact rifle, but I can buy a 983S (stainless, laminate stock) locally for $289. I guess it depends on which one you prefer.

depends. I have been looking at Varmint Rifles...the only one I could find at many different places was the Remington 700 SPS Varmint
Greentop (local legend shop) $580
Gander Mountain $650
Bass Proshops $580
Dance's (another local joint) $580
Gunsmith who will order it for me $550
as VAhuntr says...Gander Mountain was the absolute highest, by a fair margin but $580 is the most common price (MSRP is $665)
The VLS I saw at 3 places
Greentop $830
Dance's $780
Gunsmith $775
another wide gamut
