Aperature Sights

I have a new-ish, unfired Marlin 336 lever-action 30-30. I don't want to muck up its lines and balance with a scope, but I want more than the standard folding open sights. I'm not a lever action guy, so I want this to be as quick and painless as possible, with a minimum of mucking around.

I think I want an aperature sight that's low enough so that I won't have to buy a replacement front sight. Do the Lyman's or Williams' offerings fit this bill, or is there something else that does?

While not technically an aperture sight, you might try a full buckhorn sight. I recently put one on my Marlin 1894C and it works very well. You get a similar effect as that produced by a ghost ring without having to change out the front sight. Mine is the Marbles sight available through Brownell's.

Jaywalker,
I wanted the same thing for my Marlin 336. I ended up with the Ghost Ring set up from Express Sights, formily known as Ashley Express. These guys do Ghost Rings right! The set I ordered included a rear and a front, but the front is a intergral base and site that just replaces the whole thing on your Marlin. 2 screws and you are done! Take a look here....

Couldn't be easier, and gives a MUCH better sight picture than the original front sight. Dealing with this compny was pleasant and easy.

Will, thanks. I do like the square top of the front sight, but that's a lot of bucks for something that's just an occasional shooter. I'd really like to keep the hood, if at all possible.

Z, I'm not a good enough shot to hit anything unless the sights are way, far back. I NEED a receiver sight. Thanks,

Jaywalker

a hood with an aperature sight is counterproductive.

your eye wants to line the center of the hood in the aperature instead of the front sight.

Andrew wyatt: a hood with an aperature sight is counterproductive. Yeah, I know, but I like the hood.

That's the reason I want the lower sight: I don't want to have to change the front sight height. I'd then have to dump the hood.

I put a Williams peep on my W94, and I shot alot more precisely with it, at 100 yds. Removing the hood is a must though. Let us know how it works out for ya!

Jaywalker,

What he's telling you is that you will find it very difficult to shoot accurately with your hooded front sight unless the top of the sight post is centered in the hood and the hood is round.

Your eye will try center the aperture of the hood, NOT the front post as is required. Centering the aperture of the front hood sounds ok, but turns out to be much more imprecise than centering the post--especially if the front aperture isn't round.

If you're dead set on keeping the hood then you need to get a new front sight with a circular hood that has the front post centered in the front aperture.

Otherwise you will do better to stick with open rear sights.

JohnKSa,

Yeah, I understood the point about the natural centering with receiver sights, but my current sight appears pretty well centered. I'll probably just leave it as it is, though.

Thanks, all.
