911 Call: Impaled Suspect Had Knife Fight With Victims
Mahalati Is Ohio State Student

POWELL, Ohio -- Frantic 911 calls provided details of a brutal knife fight between an armed suspect and two victims at the scene of a home invasion Wednesday night. A prominent local businessman owns the house, NewsChannel 4's Larry Roberts reported.

The incident happened just after 7 p.m. in the Wedgewood subdivision in Powell, Delaware County.

Ehsan Mahalati (pictured, left), an Ohio State University student from Iraq, allegedly stabbed residents Mark Brentlinger and Brian McDonald. Brentlinger owns Midwestern Auto Group.

Mahalati was charged with aggravated burglary and felonious assault.

The first 911 call came from the chef inside the home while Brentlinger and McDonald were involved in a knife fight with the suspect in the courtyard of the home. McDonald hit the suspect with a hammer, Roberts reported.

"We have a burglar," the caller said. "He's hitting Mr. Brentlinger. He's got a gun. ... The man is on the ground. I think he's been hit on the head. It's a burglar, and he's got a big gun. ...There's really blood everywhere."

About five minutes into the struggle, Brentlinger called 911, Roberts reported.

"He has tried to stab me," Brentlinger said. "A gun ... my hand ... help."

When deputies arrived, they said they found Mahalati pinned between the prongs on the top of a wrought-iron gate. A portion of the gate had to be cut away to free the suspect. He had been impaled, Roberts reported.

"Our suspect was treated for multiple stab wounds to the upper part of his body," Delaware County Sheriff Al Myers said.

The suspect's weapon was a toy gun.

Brentlinger and McDonald are recovering from stab wounds to their arms.

Morals to this story:

1. Don't bring a toy gun to a knife fight.

2. If you're a homeowner, you should be a gun owner. (Heck. You should be a gunowner. Period)

3. Even if you're not a gunowner, never ever ever ever give up.

I love happy endings.

Mike :D

Well Mike, this just proves Ohioans don't need guns for defense--just WROUGHT-IRON FENCES! :what:

So Mike, any word on if the suspect tried a "just give me my weapon back and I'll leave" type crap? :D

One wonders just where said burglar was "impaled" by the fence. One wonders, and hopes.

I think this clearly illustrates the perils of having gates/fences in our neighborhoods. What if an innocent youth had found that gate? OOohh, I shiver to think of the consequences....:what: Gated communities obviously should not be available to homeowners. :D

I wonder if the residents' name was Vlad? :D

Gated communities obviously should not be available to homeowners.
Not to mention hammers ... :D

Hmmm - do you think anyone ever sued Stanley because they hit their thumb ????

Did the owner have a permit for that fence?

I wonder if this was one of those 'assault hammers'? No honest man needs more than a 10 oz. hammer.

And it looks like the extra dangerous "barbed" fence, which has no sporting uses.

Now that`s what I call a fight!:what:

I like happy endings too. I need to build an assault fence around my place sometime.

Always nice to hear some good news.

I dont think the homeowner has to worry about a permit, since quite obviously the fence wasnt concealed. :D

With any luck the crook will die in the hospital.

Notice how the article made to sure mention that it was a 'student' from Iraq? I wonder if we're supposed to read anything into that, or if maybe that was all the writer was 'allowed' to say until the BCI&I or FBI investigate further?

The suspect's weapon was a toy gun.

Darn for a minute there I thought maybe they'd caught the I-270 sniper. That highway is only about 4 miles away.

Iraq to Ohio? Quite the commute!

Wow! I actually have been right by this house. Very, very nice neighborhood. This guy owns a huge car dealership, very loaded. Powell is a really nice, small community outside Columbus.

Glad to see he defended himself and is alive to tell the tale! Too bad he didn't visit my friend Bill at Powell's Powder Room, he could have learned how to shoot and picked up a gun while he was there. At least he had a knife, a nasty "assault fence", and a will to live, which is better than most sheeple have.

Weird story!

December 13, 2003, 03:38 AM
so the suspect had a toy gun and a knife? and the homeowner defended himself with a hammer and then impaled the guy on a fence? I bet that was a wild scene...

You can bet the attorney's are standing in line to defend that Iraqi burglar. If the homeowners had been armed, the case is closed.

Looks like a high-capacity fence to me. Most likely more than 10 spikes. Better call the Brady Bunch!
