BIG problem! I need help

I have a 91/30 Mosin Nagant, I recently got it out of the closet to check it out (pre-shooting checkup) and there is surface rust all over the bolt, and some on the internal box mag, Im guessing its just too humid for it here, what can I do to keep this from happening? cover it in/with something? just take it back to Joplin where I cant use it but I know it wont rust?

what should I get to clean it? I have mothers mag and aluminum polish, and anything in particular in the ways of light grease or heavy oil?

Steel wool and CLP will take the existing rust off.

Breakfree CLP actually does work pretty good to clean, lubricate and protect.

What ammo are you using? How did you clean it after shooting?

Breakfree CLP will protect it better than most (it has PTFE). There is a thread with a test on nails where Breakfree CLP and several other lubs/protectorates were used in Florida and was sprayed with salt spray for 2 weeks. I use it and many of my friends in S. Texas do the same. Seems to work for us. Don't let the drying effect confuse you it will still have the PTFE barrier as a protectorate.

P.S. steal wool will remove most rust unless pitted.

Not unless you're buying very old stock. BF CLP hasn't had PTFE in it for years. I agree that it's one of the most protective gun oil. Cheap too, if you buy at least a pint. BSW

The two cans I have purchased at Walmart in the last 4 months all have PTFE on their label of contents. Did not know they were changing the ingredients??

Was the rifle stored bolt open or closed. You may want to check chamber and bore for light rust. Was mercury primers in the last rounds fired from the rifle.

Do clean the rust off with 0000 (Extra Fine) steel wool & oil.
DO not store it in a padded gun case. Open air circulation is far preferred.
DO wipe it down every time you handle it.
R.I.G. (Rust Inhibitor Grease) is the best long term rust preventative I have found in 50 years of gun collecting. Birchwood-Casey is selling it in little jars again.

There is also the Johnson's Paste Floor Wax trick.

I used the Russian surplus with corrosive ammo, but RIGHT after I shoot the gun I spray it down with Windex in the car before I drive home, then I use a gun cleaner and S&W gun oil, I stored it with the bolt closed and de-cocked and as far as I can tell there is no pitting at all, the VAST majority of the rust is on the bolt handle, not much if any is on the face, its all on the handle and on the end piece where you engage the "safety"

My guess some cosmoline from inside the bolt assembly is leaking out.

I had the same problem with my Mosin's butt plate. I am in FL so I suspect the humidity plays a role where I am as well. I took the rust off, re-blued, and just make sure to oil it every once in a while (even if I don't shoot it).
