Hello,

I inherited a gun from my uncle that he may have cobbled together. The slide identifies it as a Colt m1991a1, however when taking apart for cleaning I was surprised to find 2 recoil springs. In my previous experience with 1911's I've only seen one spring. I have not found any exploded views with two springs.

Thoughts? I guess my main concern is: "is it dangerous?" I know he liked to tinker with things, and I could see him doing some modifications that might not exactly have been standard. Would a picture help?

Thank you.

A picture would definitely help.

A full G.M. size or Commander size 1991A1 Colt came with a conventional single recoil spring.

The 1991A1 Compact (plain finish version of OACP) came with the OACP's dual spring setup.

There are all manner of patent recoil spring sets on the market, a picture might let somebody here identify it.

Measure its barrel length. (The easiest reference points are the back of the ejection port to the muzzle.) If it is 3 3/4 inches, it is a Compact, similar to the Officer's ACP. (It might even say "Compact" on the slide.) These came with a dual recoil spring. If it is a Commander (4 1/4") or full size "Government Model" (5" even), this does not belong in it and was definitely "cobbled together."

It does say compact on the opposite side of the slide.

As others have stated and your photo confirms, that is a compact M1991A1.
It appears stock, except for the laser grips. Your Compact and the Officer's ACP model both use the pictured dual recoil springs arraignment. The Compact and Officer's are petty much the same pistol varying (mostly) in degree of finish and slide roll markings.

Greg
