I'm curious as to the composition of THR members preferences for handguns vs. longguns

I own six or eight handguns, and only one rifle. That'll change in the future.

December 13, 2003, 05:15 PM
I have just five handguns and three long guns. I think it's time to balance that!

December 13, 2003, 05:17 PM
I own waaaaay more long guns because for the same money, you get a huge hurlin long gun in your hands as opposed to a small wheel gun.

Quite simple really:D

December 13, 2003, 05:25 PM
7 long guns and 3 handguns
Long guns were first and will be last, Hunting and shooting on a farm at distance is better with the long ones.
With a little age I like the handguns better, I am pretty well set in the rifle and shotgun catagories.
Handguns: BH .357, SA .45 and 22/45. Could use a longrange shooter and a 44.

December 13, 2003, 05:30 PM
More long guns than handguns. Used to be the other way around. Stupid C&R license...... :D

December 13, 2003, 05:34 PM
Lots more long guns than hand guns.

Up until about a year ago it was fairly even, then I got my C&R  :D

December 13, 2003, 05:47 PM
I'm one of the folks more into handguns than long guns. I do have a few, but there are less opportunities for me to use the long guns in my area, but quite a few handgun games to participate in.
I do have the sort of minimum long gun collection though;
.22 rifle (Ruger 10/22)
.30-30 lever action (Savage 99)
30-06 (M1 Garand)
.233 (Ruger Mini 14)
12 Gauge (Mossberg 500)

December 13, 2003, 06:32 PM
Rifles = Handguns

If you throw shotties into the equation

Longguns = 11
Handguns = 8

Probably more than I "need," but not nearly as many as I want:D

December 13, 2003, 06:57 PM
More handguns by at least a 3 to 1 ratio.

December 13, 2003, 07:02 PM
I have three of each. However the dreaded milsurp bug has hit me so there may be one more longarm added on Dec 26.

December 13, 2003, 07:22 PM
Hmmm ... *thinks* Lemme go check.

More long guns

The handguns tend to get shot more, though.

December 13, 2003, 07:24 PM
I don't hunt, and I live in a fairly urban area, so I my primary shooting is at an indoor range (doesn't allow rifle calibers, and the longest lane is 75ft.). I also have a CCW, so, my purchases have been focused on target pistols and CCW pistols. I have two long guns, and about a dozen handguns. I hope some time soon my living situation changes, and I find myself having a use for more rifles. I'm working on it.

More Hand guns
long guns

December 13, 2003, 07:39 PM
Way more long guns. Only 20 hand guns.:( 8 Wheel guns and the rest pistols.

December 13, 2003, 07:39 PM
More than a couple dozen of each - haven't counted lately, as I'm afraid they're breeding in the dark confines of the gun safes... :D

Mine's about 60/40 long guns right now, but the ones I shoot the most are hand guns.

Hopefully I'll be adding at least one handgun (a revolver) in the not-too-distant future.

December 13, 2003, 07:48 PM
I have more handguns than long guns by far. Strange, I like long guns better. However, around here there are several, convenient (within a 20-40 min drive), climate controlled indoor pistol ranges. The rifle ranges are outside (rain, snow, too hot or too cold and they aren't so nice to use), they are more off the beaten path, they have far more limited hours, and they are generally far less convenient. I might get to a rifle range only a few times a year. Meanwhile, I know that no matter how busy or otherwise unable to make it I'll get to a pistol range at minimum once a month (and sometimes once or more per week). Thus, for now handguns are a smarter "investment" since I'll get more use out of them. Now, if I lived near the NRA range in Virginia or had the money for the (over $300/yr) membership at the Gilbert's range in Rockville (and lived a little closer than an hour away) where both are indoor ranges with rifle ranges I'd likely own more rifles than handguns. When I eventually get around joining a private range we'll see what happens (exposure to the elements and location won't be much better than the public rifle ranges, but hours probably will be).

December 13, 2003, 07:57 PM
I agree with Chaim about rifle vs. pistol ranges here in MD.

That said, I have 3 long guns and 2 handguns......not bad for 1 year, I think....

December 13, 2003, 08:04 PM
1 shotgun and 3 pistols.

Nowhere to shoot rifles around here....

December 13, 2003, 08:15 PM
Without going to count I couldn't really tell you.

I have more handguns than rifles, I only have 3 rifles

December 13, 2003, 08:24 PM
7 pistols, 3 rifles, 1 shotgun...although the number of rifles is sure to go up big once the C&R gets here (darn cheap old rifles)

December 13, 2003, 08:58 PM
13 handguns and 4 long guns.

December 13, 2003, 09:00 PM
I have much more rifles than pistols. I think the ratio is like 9 to 1.

December 13, 2003, 09:23 PM
They're in a dead heat right now.

December 13, 2003, 09:46 PM
The score in my house is six to one, in favor of handguns.

December 13, 2003, 10:19 PM
7 Handguns
3 Rifles
2 Shotguns

and growing

December 13, 2003, 10:23 PM
4:1 longguns over handguns.

Handguns are only a tool fight your way to your long guns.

December 13, 2003, 10:28 PM
Two to one ratio: 46 handguns and 23 long guns as of today. :uhoh:

December 13, 2003, 10:42 PM
Strangely enough, more pistols than rifles and I perfer rifles.

December 14, 2003, 12:38 AM
Definately more long guns. Long guns seem to generally cost less, plus handguns in NC require purchase permits. Getting one of those from the sheriff is a hassle so I only have about 15 or so handguns.

December 14, 2003, 01:29 AM
16 handguns, 5 rifles, 2 shotguns

December 14, 2003, 01:41 AM
More handguns, but long guns aren't far behind.
20 handguns vs 17 long guns

December 14, 2003, 01:48 AM
13:6 Handguns to Longarms

Wife, 7:0 But after handling the Beretta Storm at the gun show, she said she wouldn't mind one of those. I said, I was planning on getting one when the prices dropped a little bit more under $700, and she said "Only one?"

December 14, 2003, 09:42 AM
Long guns wins by a little,

long guns - 10

hand guns - 7

December 14, 2003, 10:09 AM
Handguns took over, only 2 rifles left.

December 14, 2003, 11:33 AM
I've always had more rifles than handguns...still do. I seem to trade and sell in and out of handguns more often whereas I tend to hang on to the long guns.

December 14, 2003, 11:54 AM
Remington 700 ADL .30-06
Remington 870 12 Gauge
Arsenal SLR-95 7.62X39
Ruger 10/22 .22lr
Marlin Model 60 .22lr
Glock 19 9mm (2)

December 14, 2003, 12:19 PM
Well, hmmm ... I went for the approx 50/50 answer but if long guns includes M/L and shotties then they just win.

Lemme see .... hanguns 20, Rifle/carbine 18, M/L's 3 and shotties 4.

December 14, 2003, 12:26 PM
about twenty-five of each. But, as soon as I get to it, I need to re-shape my collection.

Next guns up for purchase--pending research/testing, etc. -- two new carry guns--maybe a Kahr .40 and a S&W concealed-hammer package.

and, I will finally get my gunsmith friend to do the 'turn of the century' marksman rifle out of the butchered 1885 lowall we found a few years ago.

December 14, 2003, 12:36 PM
3 handguns, 1 shotgun, 0 rifles.

December 14, 2003, 12:46 PM
I thought you had an M1A Skunkabilly.

December 14, 2003, 12:52 PM
It's about even, but the handguns are fired much more often then the long guns.

December 14, 2003, 01:42 PM
Well, I categorize Shotguns as Rifles. If that isn't what you mean, then take that for what it's worth. I also own 2 handguns.

So 2 Handguns to 1 Long gun.

December 14, 2003, 02:44 PM
Yes, more longarms than handguns.

December 14, 2003, 02:48 PM
I personally only own one gun. But my family has 3 handguns and 5 long guns (soon to be 7:) )

December 14, 2003, 04:59 PM
Pretty even for me currently at 4:3 handguns to long guns. Current want list includes 3 handguns and 3 or 4 rifles, keeping it pretty even.

Handugns -
1-.357 Revolver
2 - .45 Semi Auto
1 - 9mm Semi Auto
.38/.357 Snubbie
.32NAA/.380/9mm Pocket Gun
9mm 15+ capacity

Longuns -
1 - .22 Semi Auto Rifle
2 - 12 Gauge Shotgun
.308 Bolt Action Rifle
ThirtyThirty Lever Action Rifle
AK-47 (maybe a pair)

December 14, 2003, 06:29 PM
By far, handguns over long guns

December 14, 2003, 06:50 PM
I own 4 Handguns and 4 longguns. That will most definitly change when my C&R gets here.:D

James Bondrock
December 14, 2003, 07:12 PM
Thirteen handguns, four rifles, no shotguns.

December 14, 2003, 09:32 PM
I own far more rifles than I do handguns.

December 15, 2003, 01:33 AM
More rifles. Probably by about 7 to 1.

December 15, 2003, 11:53 PM
Let's see...8 long guns and 4 handguns, so more long guns than handguns, but I think it might have something to do with the fact that I am not yet 21.

December 16, 2003, 12:10 AM
11 rifles, only 2 handguns for now.

for now...

December 16, 2003, 12:34 AM
Two to one. Long guns over handguns.

4v50 Gary
December 16, 2003, 12:55 AM
Embarassing to say, but I dunno.:o Never counted and never even thought of it as I ran out of fingers & toes.

December 16, 2003, 01:51 AM
Pretty sure more long than short. I could go check for sure, but I'm pretty sure.

December 16, 2003, 06:28 AM
8 handguns

3 rifles

3 shotguns

December 16, 2003, 10:39 AM
longguns 18

handguns 6

December 16, 2003, 12:14 PM
Let's see...I think the ratio is 6:1, that should equalize a little this next year!

December 16, 2003, 12:40 PM
More Long Guns than hand guns, but they will be evening out come spring, then probably stay even from now until the end of my days.

Iron Mike
December 16, 2003, 07:51 PM
21 longguns, only 18 hand guns but there is cz75 out there calling me

December 16, 2003, 08:38 PM
More longuns then handguns.

December 16, 2003, 08:39 PM
More long guns due to the ability to "impulse buy" them. In Michigan, without a CCW, I can't impulse buy a pistol. i can with a long gun though. If I didn't need a purchase permit in Michigan I'd guarantee I'd have some wheelguns off that impulse buy factor.

It's a 2:1 ratio right now (long vs pistol)... although Michigan's absurd pistolpermit crap got me to impulse buy an m44 and that started my milsurp rifle addiction. Eveyr cloud has it's silver lining.

December 16, 2003, 08:57 PM
Pitiful results, we are no longer a nation of riflemen.

December 16, 2003, 09:23 PM
You only need one rifle to be a rifleman.

December 16, 2003, 09:31 PM
My ratio of handguns to long guns is 1.4 to 1

December 16, 2003, 09:31 PM
3 handguns and 1 long gun. Hope to make that 2 long guns when I add a mosin while trying to fulfill a new years resolution of more guns.

December 16, 2003, 09:32 PM
one shotgun, one rifle and 3 handguns

December 19, 2003, 01:20 AM
You only need one rifle to be a rifleman.

December 19, 2003, 08:06 AM
5:4 ratio in favor of Handguns.

That will soon change though because my C&R license just came in the mail yesterday and I'm hoping to be able to order up a couple Yugo's here soon.

December 19, 2003, 08:48 AM
Right now I have more handguns.

Zeke Menuar
December 19, 2003, 10:27 PM
The total just changed. I have one auto-pistol, two revolvers, two shotguns, one 270 and now...........drum roll please..........A M38 Mosin-Nagant.
Arsenal refinished 1944 manufacture. All numbers match. The price was so ridiculously low I couldn't pass it up, or rather Santa couldn't pass it up. It is a X-mas present from my wife. It has passed the headspace test and is currently behind me with the barrel soaking in Wipeout. The gun is in good shape. The stock has some wear marks but no big dents. Metal is excellent. After I get all of the creepin crud out of the bore it is off to the range.

The journey down the slippery milsurp slope begins.
