Whenever I'm out and about I like to have these two with me.

And when Missouri gets it's act together I plan on having this follow me around in the concrete wilderness

Don't know if I'd consider myself a Ruger fan, but it looks like that cylinder rotates the wrong way.

And yes, there are things like mt. lions that are pretty scary in the way that they will follow you.

It rotates the wrong way only if you're a Smith and Wesson fan. ;)

Doesn't look like the stock hammer. The cylinder rod thingy (I'm not up on my wheelgun terminology) doesn't look stock either. But I don't know Vaqueros very well....

Nice combo.

1- You have a Bisley hammer on a Blackhawk/Vaquero frame.

2- Those cursed warning rollmarks on the left side of the barrel are absent.

Well, I don't know what #2 is, but #1 is - it's still wearing those ugly factory grips!

I take any one of 3; a S&W 13 3", a S&W 586 4", or a Taurus Tracker in 45 Colt.

I might start using a k38 during small game.

I'll usually carry one of my Ruger SA's but usually it's a ss SBH shortened to 3 1/2" and round butted keeping close by in a Mitch Rosen "Sport" holster. Last time in the woods, i carried a HK P7M8 for the first time and found it very comfortable. Guess now it depends on where I'm going and what I'll be doing.

The Vaquero has a bisley hammer and Vaquero trigger from Power Custom and a Belt Mountain "sheriff" style base pin (That's the word you were looking for LiquidTension)

You're right about the grips mac, but silly as it might be, I kinda like the Ruger medallions, I'll have to see if I can get some nice grips made with them.

And the lack of a Ruger warning is just a trick of digital photo compression... it's still there unfortunately :(

I was just funnin' ya about 'em...my single-six them for a good long time before I found the right ones. Medallions do look good, too. I'm trying to figure out how to recess some mercury dimes into mine, as medallions.

My regular wilderness companions are...

http://www.october.com/x/minotaur_texas_six.jpg

Both of these are customs. The revolver is a Taurus Raging Bull in .44 Magnum with the barrel shortened to 3-3/4" which I nicknamed the Minotaur. The knife is a Bob Dozier #6 with extended guards and a 5-1/2" blade that I named the Texas Six.

In more open country I sometimes I go with this pair instead...

http://www.october.com/x/raging_bull_southwest_bowie.jpg
The revolver is a Taurus Raging Bull in .44 Magnum with Burris 2x-7x Scope and the knife is a Camillus Southwest Bowie with an 11-1/4" blade.

Everywhere else I carry these...

http://www.october.com/x/p7_ironfinger.jpg

The pistol is an H&K P7 M8 and the knife is a custom Günter Böhlke Ironfinger with a 3-1/4" blade.

Nice pairings, the Dozier looks like a nice knife.
I also like the knife in the last photo, Bob. Got a link to that knifemaker?

Glad you like my knives! :D

The Texas Six is my conception of the perfect general-use outdoors knife...as implemented by someone who knows a whole lot more about it than me. :)

Günter Böhlke has a web site at http://www.boehlke-messer.de/. He's a great person to deal with and a brilliant knifemaker. He knows every aspect of the craft and he can make just about anything. If he lived on this side of the pond he would be a "big name".

You can find out more than you want to know about any of my knives (along with contact information for their makers) from my web site (http://www.october.com/knives/bob/). The URL is also in my sig.

On a full scale ''wilderness'' jaunt then I'd choose one of these .... all of which will fit in my very large size holster across-shoulder deal. Carry piece of the day would also be on board of course!

Problem is which?? On balance now I think it'd be the SRH in .454 ...... adequate were it to arise I think, to deal with a bear!!

Thanks for sharing that info, Bob.
Bob Dozier makes great working knives, used to have one of his folders, but it was too pretty to use.
I'll be checking out that maker, thanks again.

This 5 1/2" Bisley .44 mag tucked into a nice cross draw belt holster would be my trail companion in the woods. Something that's lightweight and out of the way works for me.;)

The last time I was out in the forest and needed a pistol my S&W snub nose was not enough.

I was surrounded in a flash by 6 pit bulls who were out jogging a hundred yards ahead of their owner.

Pulled my snub nose and was about ready to commence capping pit bulls when the owner arrived on the scene and called em back.

Now I carry a Browning HP with a 17 round Mag!

In the past I used to take out the Taurus Tracker .357

But now that Im here in the Southwest near the invasion route, I carry my Taurus PT100.

Decided on carrying something with more capacity than power. Lot of smugglers here in the deserts. :what:

My camping/wilderness gun has been my 6" S&W 586. I bought a S&W 57 in order to have a stronger .41 mag for that purpose, however this one is a first year (1963) and in too nice shape to shoot often let alone carry in a holster. So, I guess I'm going to just have to find a more beat up 57, a 58, a .41mag Ruger of some sort, or a new Taurus Tracker or Raging Bull in .41mag for that purpose. If I have to get the new gun though I might also look for .44mag or .45LC too in case I see something in those that I want more (maybe a .44mag or .45LC Vaquero). For right around the tent and campsite I like my Winchester 94 in 30-30 as well. For knives, I got two nice hunting/woods knives (a Boker Original Bowie and a W.R. Case folder) but they are too nice to risk getting too banged up too so I bought some cheaper Winchester hunting/woods knives for that purpose as well. I will probably add a Ka-Bar soon (which will replace the cheap Winchesters for woods use).

Colt Magnum (all your base are belong to us) Carry with some hot 158 gr handloads, hides away in the tacklebox or in a safepacker on a bellyband.

(ok maybe I need to back off my recipie, the Colt is a tad tighter than my Ruger and my nuclear tipped handloads are creating stuck cases.. gotta carry a pencil to pop out the empties! Doh!)

For big game hunting I'm usually packing a Ruger Vaquero 44 mag in a 1860 Style flap holster worn cross draw and a Cold Steel Tanto.

If I'm just "knocking around", varminting or antelope hunting any number of handguns might accompany me. "whats that in your holster Rob?" "Why that appears to be a 1939 Mauser made Luger by golly, what did you bring to show and tell?" "Gee, Rob thats an odd pistol to pack around... " "Well they still haven't made a 4 inch barrel I can screw on to the 357 maximum."

Oh and hey NICE grips on that GP-100!

I bought a Reeder Alaskan Survivalist and Milt Sparks holster a couple of years ago, thinking it would be my backwoods gun. It’s so heavy that it’s just no fun wearing on a belt, and speedloaders are bulky and heavy as well. Now, I’d rather carry my 6-1/4 lb. scoped Remington Ti .308 rifle than a 3+ lb. handgun. When carrying the rifle I throw a Kel Tec P11 in my front offside pocket.

When hunting or when I might encounter the occasional range bull, I carry a S&W .45 Colt Mountain Gun with stoutish LSWC handloads. Most of the rest of the time, the regular, everyday, .45 Commander with Gold Dot 230s.

Either way, a medium-size Swiss Army knife and a Kershaw Scallion. I keep a small-to-medium sheath knife in my day pack, but not on my belt.

All the optics I need are my bifocals and compact binoculars.

:)

Best,
Johnny

WheelMan, check out this guy if you want to do something with your grips. He can make you new ones or refinish the ones you have. I have both, I can vouch for his skill, quality and service. He was even written up by John Taffin in American Handgunner.

http://home.att.net/~s.kolar/

When I'm out woods bumming I usually carry my stainless Bisley Vaquero in .45 Colt, 4 5/8" barrel, loaded with some type of heavy hardcast. Knife is usually a Buck 110.

When concealment is not an issue;
.45 Colt Blackhawk
Gerber Bowie

This rig hides under a coat or untucked flannel shirt.
.45 Colt S&W Mountain Gun
Case XX Damacus

If deep concealment is really required I am not uncomfortable with my day to day urban rig. I just switch off to 230 grain Gold Dots.

As an ultra-runner I spend a lot of time training in the woods. I don't see too much of anything following me during the day, but at night all sorts of creatures, real and imaginary, seem to be stalking me.

I carry a Kahr P9 (weight is important on a 30 mile run) for the real creatures and a crucifix for the imaginary ones.:D

Well if you plan on sticking a pig.. you might need a pig sticker. When I'm bird hunting a use a Shrade old timer.. still carry a big pistol.

Sadly, I lack a good hunting dog and a place to keep one. Even a not so good hunter still makes a fine companion in thewoods.

Camp gun is any number of .40 or .45 pistols for two legged animals but when wife and I are looking to shoot wolves, with camera of course, in remote backwoods of Idaho and Montana my Winchester 444 Marlin or Ruger 45.70 with hardcast goes along with .45 Colt Bisley with hardcast as backup. Extra film and ammo is always at hand. I especially like the Winchester which is very compact and light over the shoulder with sling to be able to shoot with camera. Bob T.
