Hey guys, one of my buddies is going to come down for a hog hunting trip and I have decided to get an inexpensive rifle he can borrow so he doesn't have to bring his. I have decided on a lever gun as I want one anyways but of these two which would you pick? I can get either one new for around $400 or less.

This is an easy pick. The Marlin 336. But the 336W is the cheapest version that you can get. You could spend even less on a 336C that will look better and function smoother due to a little wear/age. Check out used gun sources like gun shops, pawn shops, Cabelas, Gander Mountain, ect.

Marlin, hands down. It's proven itself for years.

Why not look for A nice used Marlin? You should be able to find one for much less than $400. Compare The Mossberg to A marlin side by side you will go with the marlin.

Well I did just that and bought the 464. It splits the difference between my very well worn 94 & a durable but heavy Marlin. I believe both guns have their strong points. I just bought a SS 464 trapper length & while I don't buy guns for the appearance, the fit & finish is very good. From what I've seen & read, the 464 has some of the benifits of both guns. It's light & very smooth operating like my 94, but appears to be built a bit stronger. I actually had planned to buy a Marlin, but the Mossberg feels better more like the 94 & shoots very well.

I would go with the marlin they are good rifles from the experiences I have had with mine.

got 3 marlins 336's(two 30-30's and one 44mag) and one win in 30-30. dont have hands on with the mossberg, but go with the marlin you wont be disapointed. and llike someone said, hit pawn shops and talk them down, show up with cash, and get an out the door price.

The 336 from a maintenance point of view. Easy take down for cleaning and service. The Mossy is OK, but not as easy to maintain.

Marlin.....definitely. I don't have any personal experience with the Mossberg, but Marlin has been doing it right for over 100 years. It's hard to argue with that!
