I have an H & R model 949 .22 cal. revolver that has been fired many, many times, but overall is in good condition. When fired single-action, it will light- strike two or three rounds per cylinder load of nine. Different brands of ammo seem to give varied results. Most usually if I fire it double-action, those rounds previously unfired will then go off.
The firing pin is a bit blunt, instead of being more sharp pointed as with my S&W. Is the bluntness normal in this model revolver, or should it be sharper? I looked at the schematic from a parts dealer's web site, but could not tell what shape it was.
Your comments will be appreciated.
Thanks.

I had about the same problem with a 999. With mine, the mainspring had a plastic head that was broken. It is easily investigated and replaced with the removal of the handles.

Based upon the schematic at Numrich, it appears that the 949 has a similar mainspring.

Numrich sells a replacement with a steel head.

I would check this out as the first step.

Thanks for the info. I'll take the grips off mine and check it out.

Is the firing pin on yours more blunt than sharp? I've wondered about trying to sharpen it a little with a dremel tool.

I'm laying odds on a broken plastic head on the mainspring. If that is not the problem, post back and I (or someone else) will post photos of the firing pin.

On both of my H&R revolvers, the firing pin is the hammer. I would hold off with the dremel tool. I doubt that taking metal off the firing pin is going to help solve the problem.

You are exactly correct about the broken plastic piece. Thanks for your excellent and accurate advice. I was about to make a small problem larger.

Thank you!
