I never saw myself as the 1911 type but I finally got one. I'm already feeling the addiction. This one's a 10mm (calm down purists). It's the caliber I wanted. I want to change grips and maybe a grip safety with a tactical bump. It definitely needs an extended slide stop. The Kimber site doesn't show an extended stop and only lists one for all the 1911's. Midway shows different stops for the 9mm/38 Super and .45. Nothing for a 10mm. I'm thinking a .45 will be fine. Any fitting won't be a problem. Any opinions?

Wilson makes an extended slide stop. As far as the grip safety, if you compare the Kimber Safety to an Ed Brown, the Kimber comes out just as far, it increases in thickness where the Ed Brown just has the bump on it.
It would require fitting, it is not a drop in part.

Be careful, most cannot just buy one 1911.......

The 1911 is the pistol I pick up and carry in my car more than anything. Of all the pistola weapons I have I trust it on more levels than any other in stopping power, ergonomics, and safety for my own hide. It's just a personal thing but glad you like your new purchase and hope you have many happy experiences with it.

I was looking at the Wilson slide stop. They have different stops for the .45 and 9mm/38 Super. The .45 should work, right? As far as the grip safety I'll probably go with the Kimber. Fitting isn't a problem.

I'm not sure of why they would offer a different model for the .45 and the 9mm/.38 Super, except to say that a .45 operates at a much lower pressure than the other rounds.

In any case, be sure to get a quality part for that slide stop. I bought a Delta Gold Cup in about 1988. I replaced the stock slide stop with one that I had in my parts box. Over the course of about 1000 rounds of fire, the slide stop pin bent, although I had many rounds on it already in a .45 without problems.

In any case, I'm a fan of the 10mm round. It's a wicked little sucker and is very flexible. It also shoots really flat. If you hand load, you can load ammo that runs in the .40 S&W range on up to not quite .41 magnum range.

Thanks all. Jed, I'm storing it with my Smith wheel guns and an SR9, I wonder.......Tony, I do reload and the versitility is one of the reasons I like the 10mm so much. I think I'll go ahead and order the Wilson extended stop. I can't help but believe it will be fine. The grip safety will be coming from Kimber. Still pondering on some nice grips. I'm having way too much fun wih this 1911!

Racinbob I don't think you followed the point jakemartens made about the Kimber grip safety. The grip safety you currently have on your Kimber has a spine on it that acts just like the "bump" on the Ed Brown (and others). jakemartens point was you don't have to change your grip safety since it already has the function you are looking for.

Maybe I'm not following it JTQ. I don't have the tactical bump on mine. I'd like a bit more feel in the grip safety especially with the Swartz block on this one. Kimber has one on their site that looks good. Good idea or not? Thanks so much for your help.

The Kimber you have pictured, appears to have the "spine" on the grip safety (different than a standard 1911 grip safety) that does the same thing, as mentioned by jakemartins, as the "speed bump" found on the Ed Brown (and others) grip safety.

Of course, I could be wrong. I don't have a real good view of the grip safety.

The only experience I have with either design (I have a standard Colt grip safety and never had a problem), is in the show room. To me, the Kimber designed grip safety seems like a better idea than the "speed bump". It seems like it is more forgiving of a bad grip. Both should work with a proper grip, but then you wouldn't need a bump if one had a proper grip on the pistol.

If you prefer the looks of the Ed Brown design, that is a good enough reason to change it, but I don't think it will work any better than the one you already have.

Edit: I am wrong about the "spine". That is the SigSauer answer to the "speed bump". Kimber has the tapered raised pad.

The slide stop is the same for the 10 as the .45, but the stops for 9, 38 super, etc., have a longer reach on the lug because the mag follower is farther from the side of the slide on 9s so the lug has a longer reach.

10 stops have a wider deck on the follower where it hits the stop.

I use the EGW hardened slide stop on my Delta Elite. It is not extended, but it is the best stop I've found.

I like the bumps on the grip safeties, but I've had two surgeries on my hands in the past year and have some loss of feeling in both hands. The bump makes me more likely to be sure I have depressed the safety far enough.

Get rid of the Swartz safety and replace the frame parts with the "1911 AUTO FRAME SLOT BLANK" from Brownells (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=13121/Product/1911_AUTO_FRAME_SLOT_BLANK) and you'll lose a half pound to a pound on the trigger pull. (You'll have to remember to remove the safety plunger from the slide, too.)

The 10mm in a 1911 format can be a lot of fun. I put 100 rounds through my Delta Elite shooting plates yesterday with only three misses. The funny thing was they hit the plates so hard that half the time they would bounce back upright in the rack and I'd get to shoot them a second time without resetting them...

OK JTQ, I think the coffee is kicking in this morning. I couldn't figure out the 'spline' you are talking about. Can't see a spline. It does look like my safety is tapered in such a way that it 'protrudes' the same as a tactical bump but does it gradually. Am I on the same planet?

No problem SSN, it's already got more than that through it. Anybody have any experience with the 9 round magazines from Tripp Research? I have no reason to go to 9 round but they don't have 8.

I only use Check-Mates in my Delta Elite. It just really likes them. The basepad also happens to be a perfect fit for my SA magwell...

I get them through Top Gun Supply for about $20 each.

Just picked up 3 new Mec Gar mags that were listed here. I did a search and they seem to be pretty good. Also on the way is a Wilson extended slide stop, a SS mainspring housing and some springs that I'll need down the road.

Welcome aboard, not only a Kimber but 10 mm, you will find the combination a wonder to shoot, you soon will be searching out which 10mm to buy next. I have put extended slide stops from wilson on my older Delta Elites, the Wilson and Chip McCormack mags both work perfectly with My Eclipse Custom 10MM

Thanks, Joel. I had a S&W 1006 that was really sweet but it lost it's home to fund this 1911. I hope the Mec-Gars work well in my Kimber. I think I got a good deal on them. I did get 2 Kimber mags when I bought it. The 10mm has tweaked my interest for quite some time. I reload and it's so I've got lots of options. I'm mainly a wheel gun man so I liken it to .38spl and .357.
