Bored with 223

I'm not certain when it started, but over the last 6 months I've generated a fairly sizeable malaise in terms of the 223. It isn't the platform, as I have both EBRs and Bolt guns, and I still love shooting my AR-10 in 308 and my bolt guns.

I'm also not certain if its round count - I've reloaded more than 15k 223s over the years, and much of my brass is on its 3rd or 4th firing or what it is.

While I have no problem swapping/selling rifles to get something I want, what the heck do I do with the ~1k reloads, couple k brass, and the 2k commercial I have in my ammo fort?

Anyone else suffered similar "meh" concerning a particular round?

Just about all of them at one time or another.
My response is to keep shooting them, sometimes the "spice" comes back.

At times I become bored with my .22LR, or .223 Rem. But, when I go to the farm, I usually take rifles in several calibers (.22LR, .223 Rem, .308 Win, .30-06 Sprg, .300 Win Mag, as well as handguns in 9mm and .45 ACP). As I tire of one, I can step-up to next in line of what I call the wake-me-up calibers. Guess you have to do what you feel is best for your wants and needs.

I can take them off your hands if you just want them gone. Other than that I don't really understand what you are asking.

I'm not really asking anything, other than some reassurances that I'm somewhat normal! Whatever THAT means

your not challenging yourself enough then. try harder targets. longer distances. shoot at things that explode or somthing loud to hit.
paper is not the most entertaining if it's all you do.

Get something that's class 3 in 5.56, that will wake you up. Maybe an FN FNC which is an amazing rifle, or an M16 lower. Put a LWRC short upper say under 10in on it and you could have a neat PDW.

Class 3 is a Nogo in the land of 10,000 liberals, er, I meant LAKES

Upgrade your rifle to something else and hang onto your 5.56 upper to swap out for practice and cheaper fun. There are several options that will pin to your lower but only the 5.45 and 7.62 are really cheap enough for blasting. Since you load, 6.8 is available enough to buy loaded, but capable of great results with some press time. There are some other interesting loads out there too.

Yeah, I was getting bored with .223 myself, then I got into precision type shooting. It's a whole different ball game. The .223 is an inherently accurate round. As mentioned before, try doing something that is more challenging. Shoot at smaller target or shoot at great range. Shooting at greater range is what I want to get into next. I just need to find a place to shoot that is longer than 300 yards where reading the wind really matter.

Have you ever competed and/or have access to local matches? For long range, High Power will test your abilities and question what you know about the rifle. For short and fast shooting, find a 3-gun or tactical rifle match. All that ammo will start to look small.

I went to the range for my monthly check out today. To me the range is a chore that I do only to insure my guns hit what I am aiming at when hunting. I checked 5 different ARs and my 1911. The range is boring to me but satisfying if hitting what I aim at.

I don"t mind popping turtles or snakes at the local resacas (creeks) and head shots on turtles or snakes can be a little more challenging than paper. Hunting after sunset is really my forte simply because it is much more of a challenge and is cooler. But like you shooting just for the sake of popping paper is really boring.

I would like to go on a week journey with a horse, pack animal and a good open range but that's something that I haven't sought or checked into. Not to pay for game tags and pictures of some Elk or Bear just a good horse a rifle and pistol and the freedom of exploration and eating what I shoot or catch. Whew I tired already!!

I do the distance thing yearly popping prairie dogs. The last 2 years the 223 has stayed at home - the 22-250 AI does all it can, and more out to 600 with favorable conditions. After that, the 243, 308, and 280 AI take over. While I'm by no means even close to "sniper" standards, I am able to annually punch my 500 yard ticket, and can usually pop one at 800.

Maybe the issue is the predictability. My handloads seem to just "go" where I point them, all into less than an inch at 100.

It seems a new upper may be the ticket here. Maybe a 204 is just what the Shootist ordered!

I go thru the same thing about once a year or so....Thats when i get new rifles LOL. Id suggest keeping what you got and just getting a new gun in another caliber.

I get bored with 9mm almost monthly. I just go out and shoot something I know I'll have fun with, like .22 or .17. Then I come back to 9 and see how I feel.

If you are bored with ANY of your .223 guns or ammo, I'd be MORE than glad to take those annoying buggers off your hands for you. :D

as said, you dont need to spend more money to enjoy shooting the guns you already own, if you have to find an excuse to buy a new gun you dont need one.
just try hitting a 200 yard golfball off a tee.
or get an empty propane tank at 600 yards and find a remote place to shoot it.
im not saying full by the way..

Sounds to me as though it's the style of shooting which is boring. Cartridges are just cartridges except for the type of usage.

I agree, probably style of shooting. I wish all the time I shot enough to get bored with it!!

Class 3 in MN is allowed...
Suppressors are not however. Which makes me sad because I would love to have a savage with a SBR of about 12" and a can on the end and shoot .22 shorts through it.

and to answer your original question, variety is the spice of life! :)

That is funny you mention that as being from the Midwest I had no idea supressors were illegal in Minnesota. Not to get too off topic, but I noticed there are a few States they are illegal in, 12 to be exact according to Wikipedia (not the greatest source of info I know). One really surprised me.. Vermont, supposedly one of the best States regarding 2nd Amendment rights. I don't mean to start a discussion on this, we can save that for another thread, but I just thought I'd post that info for anyone that stumbled upon this thread and didn't know this either.

How about a different platform? TC Contender pistol? Or one of those Keltec pistols-those look like alot of fun to me!

I'd store the ammo carefully, same with the rifle. Put them away and forget you have them. When you next feel the urge to shoot them, resist the temptation. If the feeling comes back you'll know you were right to keep them.

When it's time, buy a new optic or better yet remove the optic and shoot irons only. You'll find the caliber challenging you once again.

I had that happen to me with 9mm. It just wasn't doing it for me. So I sold the one 9mm pistol I had and so far haven't regretted it. BTW it wasn't a spur of the moment decision. I thought about it for months before I finally decided to sell it. I still have 700+ rounds of 9mm laying around in various places. I thought about selling it immediately but then I decided to hold off. If the prices get crazy again I'll probably gather it up and sell it. Or maybe I'll get a 1911 in 9mm some day just to see if that's a happier combo for me. Whatever you do just don't do anything without thinking long and hard about it.

As mentioned the 223 is inherently accurate and cheap to reload for a rifle round ... and if you don't reload you can find it everywhere!

You can keep the same platform and just change your style or calibur ... personally I have several purpose built ARs in 22LR, 5.7, 223, 7.62x39 and 308

Variety is the spice of life ... change your platform, the AR isn't the only game in town.

You have to have enough variety to switch it up. I may shoot bolts for a while, then semi's.

If I become "bored" then I may move back to handguns for a while or just shoot rimfire.

I personally woundn't sell anything.

My problem is accessories. Every time I save up the money I just seem to buy another gun. I need some holsters, slings, and such just as bad.

This really is a disease. :neener:

Why does the 5.7 AR have a .223 mag in it with conversion upper attached?

Im there too, but moreso about the AR than the caliber, I just am not so interested anymore, but will keep it for SHTF. Now I want old 30 cals such as ENfields, Garands etc

I get bored with different calibers from time to time, today I took my 3 year old CZ 527 223 to the range ,for the 2nd time since i purchased it, set my target at 100 yards shot 5 rounds one jagged hole shot 10 more into another jagged hole. Another 10, and another.I did this for about 120 rounds of 6 different handloads. The peformance of this gun has really sparked my interes in 223. I counld not wait to get home and load 6 more different loads.
