I'm looking for something for a project gun I've decided to bring back to life. I've got to find something good for long range on my remington. Zeiss? Leupold?

I've heard good things on Nightforce but I cna't find their website. Found alot of sales, but no real info or reviews.

Open to all suggestions.

Need something very clear. Target shooting mostly.

IMO

1 : Schmidt u Bender, Zeiss (30 mm main tubes), Swarovski (30 mm)
1.5 : Leupold, Kahles (Swarovski), Nikon, Nightforce, Burris
2 : Others (generally above $250)
3 : Others (generally above $150)
4 : Bottom of the barrel
5 : Under the barrel - BEC

This does not indicate how well they do customer service wise. Just optical and general build quality.

From my hours spent playing with scopes at the vendor tables at gun shows and trade shows:

1) Schmidt & Bender
2) Zeiss, Swarovski, and Leupold
3) Nikon, Burris
4) Bushnell

The difference between the Schmidt & Bender and the Swarovski, etc was noticable, but small. I can't justify the difference in price for the increase in quality.

US Optics IMHO.

Those USA optics ones look real nice. But wow $2500 for a refurbished scope.

I don't have any experience with Schmidt & Bender. I'll do a little checking around.

If you're really interested in a US Optics scopes, you can pick one up for a great deal less if you go here: (http://www.snipershide.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=19;t=000585)

IMHO, if you want a good hunting scope, go with either Leupold or Weaver. If you're setting up an unlimited rifle for 1000 yard competition, go with Nightforce. The others are nice, but you don't stare through a scope for hours on end - optics should be secondary to "bulletproof" construction. I'll take a "reliable" scope any day over a "pretty" one...

US Optics makes a decent scope, but sheeesh do they have huge objectives or what. Depending on the rifle, you really have to raise the scope up pretty high. Nighforce is awesome. Leupold is fantastic, and has UNBEATABLE customer service. Oh yeah, trying to get customer service from USO si a joke. They act like they did you a favor by letting you buy the scope in the first place. Nightforce's CS is OK, but not great.

US Optics scopes can be obtained with 44mm Objective, that's hardly any bigger than the 40mm you'll find on some of the Leupolds and smaller than the 50mm on some others.

Leupolds CS is some of the best. USO spotty.

So my breakdown:

Leupold - Best bang for the buck. Good quality optics and construction. Decent price. And with Premier Reticles Gen II Mildot, the best reticle (IMHO) available. Also, the reticle is available in front focal plane so you can range at any magnification. Mark 4 scopes are very sturdy.

Nightforce - Great optical quality. Better than Leupold, not quite as good as US Optics or Schmidt and Bender (yes, I have tried all these scopes). Solid construction, but a bit heavy and bulky. Multiple range finding reticle including mildot and their own NP-** reticles. Probably the best light gathering of the bunch. Pricey but worth it.

US Optics - Best optical quailty I've ever seen in a scope. Plenty of options. Can be bulky and heavy if spec with the larger objectives. Built like tank and unlikely that you can break one. Front focal plane reticles. Lots of reticle choices including new Horus vision ranging reticle. Owner does not have good reputation for CS. His son is much better at the people skills. Extremely expensive. Worth it if you're willing to take chance with CS.

Schmidt & Bender - Extremely good optics, almost on par with US Optics. Sturdy and not as bulky and heavy as USO or NF. Turret adjust in opposite direction to the U.S. made scopes. 34 MM tube so choices on rings are limited. Even more expensive than USO, but looks great on AI AWP. ;)

That's been my experience with these scopes.

If it were my money to spend it would be a Premier Reticles Generation 2 Mil-dot 6.5-20x50 LR Target Matte or if you need a little more magnification a Premier Reticles Generation 2 Mil-dot 8.5-25x50 LR Target Matte.

Never used them before, but they look solid.

I'm getting a Leupold myself. Let's face it: scopes break, and the Leupold lifetime guarantee is legendary.
