One of the members referred to 440 stainless steel as "junk" in another thread; ok you metal men...is this true?
Feel free to be as specific and technical as needed.

I think they were referring to the "440 Stainless" or just "Stainless" that appears on very cheap blades, or even kitchen utensils... There are apparently very high and very low grades of 440 SS.
The knife I just finished was probably from some of this "cheap junk", yet I care not... :)

There are are many grades of lesser Stainless Steel Knife steel. There is also 440a, 440b, and 440c. 440c was the original super steel. I myself swear by 440c. 440c is used in your high end knives. Ron Best and Edmond Davidson use it in their Integrals. It has great edge retention, it take a beautiful finish and it is wonderful for engraving.
I don't make knives with 440c, because of stigma of "440 is Junk". I use ATS34 and CPM154 because it is more desirable. But the three I like equally.
In reality 440c is a great steel. All Cheap stainless lumped into that "440 Junk". Foreign manufacturers have label any stainless as 440. But you won't find 440c
in any cheap knife. If you do you will have great knife for the price.

Like Jim said, 440 C is great knife steel when properly heat treated.
440 without a designation is usually a warning of the lower grades.
