Recently bought this old rifle from my uncle i got it and two other guns for 100 dollars. he told me that back in the day you could get a conversion plug for them to convert to 45 long colt. anybody know anything about these conversions or if they still make them? any help would be appreciated.

I have the .58 cal version...have never heard of any conversion...in fact it's hard to find any info on these early in-lines!

H&R used to offer factory fitted conversion barrels, but since Remington bought the company they won't fit barrels to the older guns. A person would need to do that on their own.
A replacement barrel would be relatively inexpensive.
A .45 Long Colt/.410 barrel was the only center fire cartridge that could be used with their shotgun receivers, and H&R used shotgun receivers to build their muzzle loaders.

used to be a man here in arkansas(long sinced passed on) that took H&R 45-70's and plugged them on purpose to hold a shotgun primer. installed a thick brass ramrod. they shot great with conicals. maybe you have one of those? if so you might be able to get a replacement barrel.

This outfit has all kinds of chamber adaptors & inserts. Maybe something could be customized to work.

H&R 58 cal in-line

I had one of those for a number of years and traded it off, and got a 58 cal Navy Arms Hawken Hunter side lock. The H&R was a very good shooter with round ball. Wish it was still here to shoot.

I got a cow elk and a 3 pt buck (western count=one antler) with the Navy Arms 58 cal, shooting the Lyman 577611 minnie ball. It does hammer them dead with over 500 grains of lead.

what is the correct ball and patch size for the .58 Huntsman and what loads are acceptable in it?
