Direct quote from our state's constitution: "Every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned."

Shall issue, open carry without a permit, no 4473 form with sales among private citizens, no dumb waiting periods or one gun per month restrictions.

The Brady bunch grades us 11 out of 100, so there's some work to be done, but no complaints.

North Carolina - moderate, but strict compared to neighboring states.
I wish duty to retreat would be eliminated from our castle doctrine. I

Virginia is pretty good, easy to get CC permits and we have open carry. I'm embarrassed by a Brady score of 17, though. Must be those stupid counties clustered around DC with their waiting periods. Stupid because you can drive half a mile out of Fairfax or Arlington into Prince William and there is no waiting period for state residents. I'm sure the county regulations made the Supervisors feel good even if they accomplished nothing.

Thanks for the reminder - I keep meaning to put my state in my profile so it shows up (as I often have to make note of it in some threads).

IL - a dictatorship subject to the Madigan and Daley regime. No concealed carry, No open carry. Only *just* got the right to own handguns. Still subject to an "assault" weapons ban.

South Carolina. No CWP needed for car carry, but open carry prohibited. Overall better than average; the last two years in a row the state has held a "no tax" weekend for gun purchases and has talked about doing away with gun registration.

Better not have any teflon-coated bullets or handguns with frames that melt below 800 degrees though!

Texas, better than some. CCW for handguns in your car for all non-felons over 21. Open carry for any long gun, anywhere, loaded or not, but I wouldn't try it down town in a metro. Your car is covered by the "Castle Doctrine", as is your house.

CCW shall issue. No permit required in your vehicle. Guns must be concealed in a vehicle. As in , no leaving it out in the open , does not require on person concealment but it is legal in the vehicle even without CCW

Tennessee.

State Constitution Article I Section 26 guarantees the right of the citizens of this state to keep and bears for defense of themselves; the state reserves the authority to regulate the wearing of arms in public with a view to prevent crime.

Court rulings and state attorney opinions are that the RKBA specificly protected is individual for self-defense and for volunteer service. The specific protections do not negate ownership or use for traditional lawful purposes (hunting, protecting livestock from predators, etc). Regulation must serve a purpose targeting criminal behavior without restricting the lawful ownership and uses of guns.

If we could induce California,New York and the Caribbean to take back our transplant, migrant and immigrant population things'd be a LOT more livable hereabouts! Fleas and mosquitoes would be far preferable! After all, most of the negative gun laws we have originated in the Dade Co. region.........then too, so did Janet (of Waco fame) Reno, and she was nearly singularly responsible for the outlawing of open carry.

New Jersey here. This is one of the absolute worst states in the country for guns, property taxes, and car insurance!

We are shall issue on hand gun permits in the home and may issue on CCW in which hardly anyone EVER gets approved. And when they do, the permits are conditional.

One gun per month rule. Need a FOID card and you need a permit for every hand gun you buy.

HOPEFULLY though, there is some light at the end of the tunnel as we currently have some legislation on the table to approve shall issue CCW for $500 bucks.

Here in New York State, it's very much county-by-county or even judge-by-judge. I have an unrestricted CCW, but a lot of people in my county are now getting the BS "hunting and target only." It seems to be the new default. Can be amended later to full carry... maybe.

OK here's NY State in a nutshell...

THE GOOD

pistol permits are good for life
many counties are "carry friendly"
can carry anywhere except schools, courthouses, post offices

THE BAD

no open carry
no carry in NYC with a NY State permit
unfriendly judges who drag heels on permits
AWB :banghead: :fire: :barf: :cuss:

I live in Vermont, pretty good I can carry at 20 which is wonderful, no permit required OC or CC. However there are a few things that need to change, we do have duty to retreat laws and I do not think you can get a suppressor but yeah not to shabby.
I think what Vt dear hunter meant was that when you buy the guns from a FFL it is registered, not a FTF deal which you do not need to register.

What duty to retreat laws in Vermont are you referring to?

According to the VT constitution Article 1:

Article 1st. All persons born free; their natural rights; slavery prohibited.

"That all persons are born equally free and independent, and have certain natural, inherent, and unalienable rights, amongst which are the enjoying and defending of life and liberty, acquiring, possessing and protecting property, and pursuing and obtaining happiness and safety."

I don't have to retreat from ANYBODY that tries to hurt me or mine...

So long as I don't carry with the intent to commit a crime or harm a fellow human being, I'm ok to carry. However, I do have the legal right to carry for self defense. I'm less worried with the two legged animals and more concerned with meeting the four legged ones on a back road late at night...

Also, buy from dealer it's registered and you are run through NCIC, buy from me or some other guy, it's a bill of sale and/or a handshake...

Axel Larson
May 18, 2011, 12:22 PM

@Axel... I re-read the VSA's and couldn't find anything about having to retreat from a threat. I've also re-read the entire Vt. Cons and didn't find it there either. NONE of my local towns (southern vt) have any ordinances about this. Can you provide the link to the law you are referring to?

I live in a town with no municipal police, only state police coverage. The barracks is at least 25 miles door-to-door from my house. Trust me, if a bad guy breaks into my home or threatens me or mine, he'll be looking up from the floor at the muzzle of my gun until they arrive and I guarantee I won't be the one getting arrested.

I'm not Johnny Rambo, and I'd hate like heck to do it, but if I'm put into a kill/be killed situation, I'm gonna fight with everything I got to stay alive, regardless of whatever the law states...

Texas- Pretty good gun laws here, although we still got a 6 from the Brady Campaign. The shame of getting beat by Oklahoma will not soon fade ;). Oh well we will just have to join our sister states Alaska, Arizona, and Utah in 2013.

Florida, pretty good on CCW. I as veteran did not have to do class. Also, they just changed the law so one does not have to report address changes.

Mine's listed to the left there...

I'm a bit surprised by the many that proudly mention the name of their state in this thread but failed to add it to their profile. Do they really expect anyone to remember or come back to this thread to see where the heck they're talking about?

my national security and terrorism teacher, said that in vermont if you can retreat into another room if you are in your house you are required to by law rather than stand your ground in that room.
could be possible but would like to read that law
