From The New York Times, of all places:

From: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/10/weekinreview/10cooper.html?_r=1&ref=weekinreview

The article is not about firearms but mistrust between the governments and militaries of the US, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The graphic above correctly (I believe) shows the main rifles used by each country. It would have been easier to just clip 2 random rifles and most of their readers would not know the difference.

(Also, before a moderator gets here, any opinions on weather this thread in on or off topic?)

I was surprised to find this in the local paper.

An SKS a semi-automatic version of an AK-47 was sitting in the back seat of the car, Kern said.

Normally they would call it an assault rifle and be done with it.

An SKS — a semi-automatic version of an AK-47

But it is still wrong.

I suppose it's easier than saying: "Everything we've been calling an AK-47, your typical AK or AKM clone sold in this country, is actually a semi-automatic version of an AK-47. Now about the SKS, there once was a guy named Simonov..."

It doesn't surprise me the NYT got it correct, they are a pretty solid paper.
