Are there any requirements to start your own business as a gunsmith, such as a certificate from a training course, etc. Or does that vary state by state?

Dunno know, but you will need an FFL.

Yesterday I could not spell Gunsmith, today I are one !

:neener: I am not aware of a government (at any level) requirement to have training to become a gunsmith. There are of course schools the teach the trade, and some start that way. Others are self taught, or apprenticed into the business.

No certifications are required, though if you mess up someone's gun, word will get around very quickly.

You will need either a Type 01 (dealer) or Type 07 (manufacturer) FFL, depending on exactly what you want to do with your business.

There are certificates available, from Community or Trade colleges, but none are required to open up a business as a gunsmith.

You'll need a FFL, type would depend on what you plan to do, liability insurance and a business license.

The hardest thing will be to get someone to trust you to work on their gun and being able to charge enough to pay your bills. I personally know several gunsmiths, who have national recognition, and none of them are swimming in money. Most were lucky when they started, that they had someone to support them or they had a day job
