I have a 45/70 Guide Gun SDT 16 1/2" barrel.... I shoot it mostly for fun and im not looking for perfect hunting load, as i believe what i have will suffice :D

Im pushing a 405 rem to about 1600fps w/50gn IMR3031. I always see people claiming 2000fps or more but im sure their guide guns have a longer barrel which i understand = more fps..... I think the max load is 51gn for this combo.

Can i make it go 2k? safely? Would something like Lil"Gun work? I cant find any data for it but seems reasonable.

I know its gonna hurt and i know its too much, but i just want to try max at least a few times

I was playing with maxes, and the advice I have is that while you might be able to get to 2K, though I don't know about with a 16 inch, it's not always the smartest thing. The line between ok and Kaboom is a bit narrower with a Marlin 45/70 then it is with a bolt gun meant for high pressures. I settled for a 405 around the 1900 mark, using 43.5 IMR 4198, if memory serves. Plenty of whack, and safe to boot. I went up to 45 or 46 I think, and at 46 it sounded different and was close to the level of artillery. I decided that my ugly face is worth preserving, and I should go get a 458 Lott if I want to go any higher.

Start moving up the load with H4198 or IMR 4198

You'll get to 1900. Donno about 2k with that short barrel...

+1 for IMR 4198

45 grains under the Rem 405 SP gave me 1913fps out of a 22" bbl Marliin 1895 and it packs a wallop. Hodgdon lists 46 as max for a 400 grain Speer bullet.

I'm doubtful you'll get to 2000 safely with a 16" barrel.

Just remember IMR 4198 and h-4198 are NOT the same!!!

I capped out in the low 1900's with a 405g Rem SP and IMR4198 and Rx7 in my 18.5" 1895G.

Pay attention to all the details, hold on to your hat and sneak up on it slow. LRS_Ranger is right about that line he mentions.

I'd be tempted by H322 if I was to do it again.
