I went to my first Smallbore Silhouette Match today. It was a blast. I didn't do so good, 12/40 and 9/40, but on the second time I noticed that my scope was loose, but I had a great time. The people were very nice and friendly (men and women). The main problem was that the wind was blowing about 20-25 mph crossways. Even the experts were having trouble. I was just having trouble standing.:what: But needless to say, I am hooked. I can't wait till the next match. One of the first things I did was to go to "the toy store" and buy a silhouette scope for my rifle, a Marlin Model 60.

I may check it out after I get more range time on my rifle. Right now I'm just having a ball loading ammo and shooting paper.

Randy, congradulations!! Happy you are having fun and sounds like you are surrounded by a great bunch! Have fun as that is what it is about. I got started April 2009. Our season is April thru September. I have learned a great deal from our long time silhouette shooters. You are always surrounded with advise for any questions you might have. Good luck

Congratulations Randy for stepping up to the line!

12/40 is a respectable score for a 1st match, esp. in a gusty wind with a scope that was probably starting to loosen up. Please give us a match report after you compete with the new scope under better conditions.

Btw, what scope are you getting?

RugerGP100fan - imo, waiting for more range time (i.e. getting better) only delays a shooter's development. I've seen new guys come to a practice to check the sport out and leave their rifle in their car because they need more 'range time'...

Were you shooting NRA or IHMSA silhouette?

What class?

I used to shoot a lot of IHMSA silhouette from 1976 - 1983. Loved it.

I shot one NRA Field Pistol match here in Florida, but I couldn't get anyone to spot for me. They'd hardly talk to me. Most unfriendly bunch of shooters I ever heard of.
I was shooting a 6" M-29 with .44 Spl plinking loads that I hadn't sighted in past 25 yds. I won the match. That tells you what the level of competition was like.

Anyway, have fun. Sounds like you have a good group at your club.

I just did my first IHMSA match last month, shot a 27 in production and had a great time. Shot the last one of the year a week or two ago and didn't do so well, 22 in production and 25 in production any sights. (with my iron sighted production gun) Its a boatload of fun, and I'm going to practice hard with my .44 over the winter, I want break 30 next season and classify international!

Japle, I compete NRA Silhouette rifle hunter class which I took up last year. I never shot any firearms up until 2007. I bought a Marlin 39a and joined a local indoor club 2007, which you had to be an NRA member and shot my rifle a couple times. Then I learned about the Beloit Rifle Club, Beloit, WI, just 10 minute drive from my house. I had read about chickens, pigs, turkeys, rams and decided to visit the Beloit Club one evening late 2008. One of the fellows I met shooting trap that evening, was also encharge of the Silhouette league, small bore rifle. I shot with them, indoor, over the winter and joined the club in February. I was a class B all of 2009, May-Sept participating every Thursday eve. I came in second state class B with 2 score total of 23/80 in 2009. 2010, I picked up my rifle twice a month over the summer as we did a lot of traveling for 3 months. Mid July, when we were home for 2 weeks, I decided to try the state match again, won class B, with 32/80 and moved into low class A at the same time. That is where I am now with my Marlin 39a which gets a lot of looks and people want to try it. It is not the most accurate, but get dime size 40m, nickle size 60m, qtr @77, and 1.5in at 100m, with CCI Blazer off sand bags. I found cheap ammo that shoots the best. Two weeks ago, I bought a new Vortex Viper 6.5-20X44 to replace my second hand Simmons 6.5-20 that got me started for $50.00. The Vortex is of small Target Dot which I thoroughly like! For indoor, I have to use the Simmons as parallax goes down to 50ft. Vortex is 50 yds. We start to shoot indoor for fun, mid January through mid April, once a week. I plan to practice more often with 2 indoor ranges within 10 minutes. Get a little more serious, you might say. We have a great group of fellows. When we move indoor in January, we have 4 fellows from the Cowboy Action Group, that join us using their pistols. We shoot rifle and pistol silhouette paper. Wife and I are thinking about spending a couple months in FL., February & March. I have not looked up any rifle ranges if in and around Fort Lauderdale. Done.

Sounds like you had a good time.

I started shooting competitively when I was maybe 12. Smallbore Silhouette with a Winchester 52.

I still shoot it when I have the time. For me it is one of the most relaxing yet intense games there is.

I have a few XP-100s and two Freedom Arms 83 (41 Mag and 22LR) for IHMSA and an Annie 1827 and 1913 for smallbore rifle.

I wish I had more time and that there were more matches near me. However I think the sport is dying locally.

I went into the Hospital and just got out tonight. I am a kidney transplant patient (almost eleven years). I bought a BSA Sweet 22 scope. I put it on my Marlin Model 60 stainless I had in the safe. I made a quick trip to the range last week. After sighting in it shot 3/8" groups 50 fifty yards off bags. Better than I can shoot. Ha Ha. Last month was our last match untll May. Some said we will have pratice matches on nice weekends :neener: :neener:
