I found out last week that i'll be getting transferred up to Kodiak, AK this summer with my family. I am contemplating purchasing a SS version the the Marlin 1895G Guide gun in 45-70. I was previously stationed in Sitka, AK but always carried a shotgun with slugs. I plan on doing some hunting when i get up there and currently do not own a big bore hunting rifle. I've noticed many posts on the guide gun and even more posts from folks living on Kodiak island. During my 2 years stint in Sitka i never made it over to Kodiak.
I've also heard that there is a nice covered shooting range in Kodiak. I can finally do some long range shooting with my AR-15! and souped up 10/22.

There is a nice range in Kodiak, though I never got a change to shoot there. The bear situation is nothing to mess with. Will you be in Kodiak or somewhere else on the island?

Any feedback yet on the PMC 350-grain .45-70 load? Looks like about my upper limit for recoil from my 1895G. Wonderin' about performance downrange.

It will be about $300 more expensive but i say you get a 458 SOCOM uppper for your AR from tromix. KABOOOOM!!! :D

John we push 2150fps with a 457 mag 350 grain in the Guide gun :) If you hit it with that it dies :)

I havent seen a box of the PMC yet..we have been selling TONS of 45/70 loaded by the Hunting Shack in Montana (406/777-2106), website http://www.thehuntingshack.com/...runs about 1900 (?) with a 350 grain Kodiak...its the best 45/70 we have seen and not real expensive..

It's made by a company in Anchorage, Wile West Guns. The price is steep but not outragious. I have read several reviews about these rifles and am seriously considering a purchase. Any info would be appreciated.

I think the Marlin is a good choice, but it's only half of the equation. If you don't roll your own, fork up a few dollars and get some nasty rounds from Garrett or Buffalo Bore or whoever.

Uhm I have heard it is nice , but from what I know it is mostly used for CHP training.
There are two outdoor ranges here also , but both are now locked with a padlock (Yearly cost of key is $40 with a NRA membership.I think it is $60 otherwise.)A lot of people(Stupid) shoot in places where there isn't a real range . If you ever get out to "John Wayne Rock" and decide to shoot , don't there is no berm and rounds fall on the beach where people play with thier kids.The best gunshop in town for friendly service is Mack's (Always ask for Eric.)and Bear Country will do SGN orders with no fuss.Ammo prices are insane up here so bring as much as they will let you . Even base charges way to much for ammo .
A .308 or 30-06 will cover just about anything with the right ammo and save your shouldersome too , but that is just a prefrence thing.Just be smart about the bears and you should be OK . I always felt safe out there in the woods no matter what I was packing.
If you need any predeployment info or anything shoot out a P.M. and I will scrounge up what I can for you .When you get to town head to the Mecca and ask for Barb on the weekends and she can forward your info to me when she gets home if you want to hit the range or anything .
