It is a wonderful smell that immediately conjures a relaxing mindset. Several months ago I spilled about a third of a bottle in my man cave and the aroma was particularly pungent for weeks. I miss it now.

If a Woman is not wearing no. 9 on the first date, there will be no second date.

My wife actually likes the smell of Hoppes #9. When I used to clean pistols after range sessions, she would pull up a chair with two glasses of icea tea and watch (she still does and now offers to deprime/resize brass too as Lone Wolf barrels minimally expands the brass). I would ask, "You don't mind?" she said, she actually liked it.

BTW, she also likes the smell of her 2 stroke quad exhaust too. :D

Or, rather, how it doesn't end.

I think its funny as I look back but we used to put a little No. 9 on out shirts for that "Manly" aroma when we went to school. We're talking back in the mid-late '50s. The old saying of "My after shave is Hoppes No. 9" was true for many years.

Then they changed the formula. :cuss: New stuff just don't smell as good. Oh well.... :(

All I have to do is open a bottle of Hoppe's Nine and it brings back such good memories from when I was a kid.

Not mine. She pretty much comes unglued when I am cleaning guns in the house. I don't know how I missed this clearly disqualifying trait 22 years ago.

How do you say Hoppes? One part of the country I lived in said "Hops", and another said "Hop-ees". I actually wrote them to be sure but never got a response.

It is in fact Hop-ees. However, I have heard all manner of people say it differently.

+1 for Hop-ees" - never heard of "Hops" being used. If the e's are silent in use, then that part of the country would pronounce coffee as "coff"?

It's pronounced Hop-ees.

While the name has remained the same for 107 years, the formula hasn't.
It used to contain nitrobenzene (a carcinogen) but they removed it.
Other ingredients that they once listed but may have changed as well are:
Kerosene
Ethyl Alcohol
Xylene
Amyl Acetate
Ammonium Hydrochloride
Citronella

15 bucks for an air freshener? I rather just dip a rag into the cleaner itself and stick it under a car seat... Bump that price...

Just clean your pistols with Hoppes #9 and you get the aroma for free! :D

If not for the aroma I would not use Hoppes. It's a decent cleaner, not the greatest though IMHO. I do use it for the final run through just to have that scent that the others can't come close to matching.

The 'odor' brings back good memories: but for $15 a pop, I'll limit the good memories to gun-cleaning daydreams/sideaffects.

Let's see, $15: over 500 primers, almost 200 9mm bullets, a fair bottle of wine!!! OH, THAT trumps the airfreshener ANY day!!!!

Are they serious?
That stuff reeks!

I stopped using it cuz of the stench. I don't have a backyard, so I'd have to go to the front yard. I could just see my neighbors calling the cops cuz I have 8 handguns out to clean. LOL

I'm proud to say I've never been arrested & I'd like to keep it that way.

My FIRST wife objected to the smell of #9. (Note the emphasis on - first.)

Many long time users of #9, especially guys in the know, such as bench rest shooters, found that it lost some effectivness when the "nitro" was removed from formula. At least one supplier I know of has offered nitro to rejuvinate #9.

here is a website I found discussing it

http://www.howardcommunications.com/hoppes/new-hoppe-s-no-9-air-freshener

here is a quote from that website:

"The Hoppe’s No. 9 Air Freshener will be available at your favorite sporting goods and/or hunting store and will sell for a suggested retail price of $3.99."

that sounds a little more like it... I wish they made a hat or a t-shirt... that would be sorta cool...
