Hey also can anyone recommend a good leather OWB holster for this.

Might as well get a good one and do it right.
Order a 5 inch one from somewhere. I like Milt Sparks.
There are others , most stocked ones are six inch unless you want a belt slide.
I didn't look at S&W site, maybe they have them since the Classic mods are being made now.
Good luck, and don't settle on a 6 inch.

To the OP: Nice revolver. Yours is a little older than mine, but looks great. Mine is a great shooter, and I'm sure yours will be.

Heck yeah, pencil barrel model 10s (5" barrels in particular) are among the best looking handguns ever made, IMVHO.

Very nice M10, you did well. As for a OWB holster I highly recomend the Simply Rugged Range Master, I just bought one not long ago for mt M10 HB, It makes for one heck of a field holster. It is the epitome of simply rugged.

At the top of the revolver page, there is a sticky for dating Smith revolvers. Post your info there (see page one for what they need, info-wise) and chances are pretty doggone good someone can date your gun for you.

Yea nice five incher yourself cajun. Yea I picked this up in my buddy's gun shop for just that reason, to be a shooter. Got a heck of a deal on it too $275. I dunno what it is but lately I've just been going nuts over revolvers, I mean I really like my semi autos but there is just something timeless about a good balanced revolver. Also thanks for that holster suggestion 336 ill have to check that out.

I was kinda hoping this would turn into a model 10 porn thread MUahahhahhaaaa. :D

They just don't (won't) make them like that any more. I agree with the five inch barrel. I like the middle ground of more than four but not as bulky as six.

Yeah, the 5" barrel makes sense. I will be more accurate further out than a 4" but maybe not as accurate as the 6" one. As a young deputy sheriff we were required to carry off duty. I was too poor to buy a snubby. I can't believe now that I actually carried my 6" off duty under shirts, sport coats, and other outer wear. I carried it in a cross draw, too.
However, I saved my extra money and finally had enough to buy a Chiefs Special. Made concealed carry a walk in the park.

Great bluing and the case coloring is still perfect. Hope it shoots as good as it looks!

Belonged to my late father. Dates to around 1970 to the best of my knowledge.

I almost certainly fired far more rounds through it in 2009 than my father did in the 35 or so years he owned it.

It's hard for me to pass up a good revolver too. Not long after I got the one pictured here, I found another one, with a 4" barrel, maybe not quite as nice, but close, with the box and all the papers. They wanted top and I mean top dollar for it. I managed to talk them down some, and went ahead and bit the bullet and put it on layaway.

Here's mine from the other side. It was made in 1979 BTW.

There was a time when I didn't care for the "pencil barrels." I thought they looked quaint and old fashioned. Now I like them because they look quaint and old fashioned.

I put a set of Hogue Momogrips on mine, but they were so ugly I had to go back to the standard S&W grips pictured.

I know what you mean cajun, I'm in the same boat. It's got that throwback look to a different era, in a way some guns for us are like a time machine just like other antiques are but for us more so since well were gun people. :D

I'll never forget the first time I held a model 10 and realized I wanted to get one at some point. My neighbor in when I lived in Dallas was a security guard and up until that point I had only shot/held .357 mags and chiefs special's. Never a full size .38 only. I was over at his apt watching a movie when I saw his gun belt hung up and asked him what .357 he carried since it was a revolver and I assumed that's what he would want. He surprised me by saying, "no .357 is just fine but that .38 is all I need to get the job done and it shoots damn straight." I held it in my hand and was AMAZED at the overall light weight and balance in the gun. So that's where I was hooked.

Also cajun I did put on the Huge grips myself and LOVED the feel of them but I don't like the way they slide on the gun, so I ordered myself the Pachmeyers and well see how I like those.

Oh and GP100man nice one ;)

This is the first weapon I ever shot as a kid and it was with my grandfather on his farm. 1968 S&W model 10. Grandfather passed away and I had forgot all about this until my mom reminded me she had it. Went over opened the case and almost passed out because it had been tucked away never wiped down and had rust all over it.

There was no way I could leave it in this shape it was a real beauty in my memory and I knew my grandfather was very proud. There was no doubt I was going to send it back to S&W to get it refinished, I told them to make it like new. For how it turned out and everything they did for a price under 200 bucks I was am very happy.

RevolverGuy, that is gorgeous!

I have lately become re-interested in classic S&W J and K frames, and a 4" pencil barrel is definitely on my want list!

Revolverguy,

I was saddened to see what happened to Grandfathers model 10. However was very pleased to see it had a happy ending thanks for not leaving me in suspense LOL. :what:

Kudos brother.

The cool thing is S&W took about 3 weeks to do it, the picture does it no justice. This is the old time bluing from S&W its deep and almost wavy looking. Sad thing is I don't want to shoot it now it is so beautiful :)

No offense to other gunsmiths I know a few that does great work but S&W will be my first call from this point forward. They put all new internals in it as well and sent me all the old stuff. But sometimes it is really the small stuff, I sent it in without the grips and was looking all over to find that vintage grip style. I got it back it had a note in the box from the smith with the bill of sales saying he knew it was my grandfathers weapon and he didn't have a set of new grips at the time but he had these just about new grips which were his very own and he did not charge me for them.

This guy actually said I hope everything is to your liking but most important I hope it keeps your connection with your grandfather alive.

The personal touch he added was just unremarkable for me. Since I have purchased quite a few things from the smith store (grips range bag etc) online knowing I could get it cheaper some place else but they have earned my support.

That 5" pencil barrel looks real good. Quaint and old fashioned? I prefer to think that they more "balanced". ;)
