Could I get some recommendations for buying a new 5.56 at a gun show this weekend? What brand, model? The going price? Last time I was there they also had a table where they would custom build a rifle from new and used parts so that too is an option.

I hate to say this, but you might want to do some of your own research. Usually those of us here are really trying to be helpful, but with this question there really isn't that much to go on. What do you want to use it for? What features do you want on it? What are you willing to spend? etc etc. This is a good place to ask a this vs. that question, but unless you ask specifics, you won't get any real answers...

After buying a gun show special myself, I'd recommend a new complete rifle so you know what you have and a place to go in case you have a problem.
I'd also recommend a rifle or midlength over a carbine for fewer problems. Not everyone that puts an AR-15 together knows what they are doing.
