Changing Firing Ranges

I've been going to the same firing range for a dozen years. During that time, the city has grown around it (although it's on the flood plain), the facility has been enlarged and improved, the NRA gave the range a big grant for even more improvements, and membership has skyrocketed.

I can't stand the place anymore.

So I just joined a club that is located out at the end of a tractor trail. The pistol range is in two feet of water that is left over from the last hurricane, the 200 yard range only has one target board that's still standing, and the spotter pits look like Korean War relics.

I love it!

Had the place to myself. No one took my brass. Wasn't swept a single time.

Prime Zen shooting. I'm never going back to the "improved" range.

I go to a place like that here in WA. Old equipment, diagonal lanes of fire, mountains of brass on the ground, wind howls through the shooting positions, a chick with dyed-black hair running the joint, it's great!

My range is limited to 750 members, and there's hardly anyone there, yet the facilities are fairly new and well kept. I guess I'll count myself lucky.

mountains of brass on the ground

That would be enough to get me to join! Free brass...mmmm.

-I picked up about ten pounds of brass while I was checking out the grounds.

Another plus!

Yeah, we've got old dudes (who reload) running back and forth with their shirts pulled out and carrying loads of brass back to their spots. I feel like just donating some 5 gallon buckets to these guys (I'm a drywall foreman and have LOTS of buckets), but then I just said screw it.

When I shoot, I make sure that any brass I want to keep never hits the ground. Not that they're picking you clean while you shoot, but just to make sure...... The kids who come out on the weekends keep the brass piles high. They never collect their brass, much less sweep it up.
