I'm not really up to date on the hoops one must go through to buy a gun in CA. Can I get an idea of what taxes and fees you'd have to pay to buy a gun, in particular a rifle (if that makes any difference)

You pay sales tax, $20 DROS fee and $5 another government fee, I forget what it's called. Not too many hoops for buying a rifle, you only need to bring a driver license/ california ID. They will also make you pay for a trigger lock if you don't have a safe.

Forget the rifle and get a semi-auto pistol.

You won't be able to for much longer, so get them while you can...

Oh, please. What do you think I'm going to do in another 5 years when I'm 18? Just stay here, in Kalifornistan? I'll be able to get plenty of handguns in a free state.

To buy a longgun you have to sign a piece of paper, listing the safe you own that conforms to certain safety standards. For example: the combo must take a certain number of digits, there must be enough bolts of more than a certain length.

Blah blah blah.

you have to be 18.

Fill out the forms, wait 10 days (weak) and it's yours. They (really any gov't agency now) now have your name, address, and weapon SNs all keyed into a giant database under Fed control. Of course, there are laws to make it illegal for them to tap that database withought a lot of effort. But do you think those laws are encorced? I don't.

On the form:

DO NOT give your SSN, (it is 'optional'. Hah, yeah, right.)

Other than that, getting a long gun in CA ins't toooo bad as of yet.

Handgun is much much worse.

Drjones,

Sadly I think you may turn out to be prophetic. Even if the Legislature doesn't ban them outright, with all the hoops one has to jump through to buy a pistol on the "APPROVED LIST" there are going to be fewer sales. Many companies will just refuse to sell their wares in the PRK because it is too expensive to get on and stay on the list. This is what the Democrats in power are really all about. Anyone wanting to know what the Dems have in mind nationally just have to look at California. Too bad the left has taken over at the leadership level. Many Dems here in KY are quite conservative and the party does not really represent them any longer.

Also, if you're buying a handgun you must have your HSC or pay up to $25 to get your HSC.

Okay, see here's my situation: I know you have to be 18 to buy a gun/21 for a handgun. Basically, I get my parents to buy guns, by paying them, or making some sort of deal. Whenever I say "I'm getting a gun" I mean I will pay my parents to get it for me. No, it's not a "straw purchase", the gun would technically be theirs.

cosmos: didn't know there were SLO THR members. (well, I do know about one named "Recon By Fire")
