I am really struggling with which Model 70 to purchase in 30-06. I started doing some reading on the Featherweight versions. People seem to really love this gun. Now, I am confused.
Which do you like better as a general purpose hunting gun? Why?
The specifications are remarkably similar:
FW 22" 42 1/2" 13 3/4" 1/2" 1/2" 7 lbs.
Sptr 24" 44 3/8" 13 3/4" 1/2" 1/2" 7 lbs. 4 oz
How differently do they shoot?

Not THAT much different...
The 'Sporter' will be a bit more stable but the 'Featherweight' will carry a bit better.
2" of BBL length is not enough to worry about velocity wise, and 1/4lb is not that significant recoil wise - so get the one that suits you best.

Featherweight in 308 or standard in 30-06. Maximize the weight reduction combining a short action in the Featherweight.

I like the featherweight; the only downside to me is that I can't put a Harris bipod on the fore-stock with the Schnabel profile.

I bought a .270 featherweight last year and love it. I like the looks of the Schnabel forend and the feel of it is great.
